Bike officers stop alleged drug deal
By the Lincoln Journal Star
Lincoln Police officers who started training Monday to incorporate bicycles into their patrol saw a man allegedly dealing drugs out of his car while they were on bikes later that night.
After training earlier that day, two officers who were on bike patrol saw a car with a defective exhaust pipe driving erratically near 11th and G streets around 10 p.m., said Officer Katie Flood.
The car stopped and a man approached, and the officers saw an alleged drug deal in progress, Flood said.
The driver, Eric Bender, 28, allegedly had 43.4 grams of marijuana, plastic baggies, a glass pipe, an electronic scale and $1,101 cash, Flood said.
Bender was arrested and jailed on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, Flood said.
The police department’s Southwest team plans to have two bicycle officers on each shift to patrol the city core area from A Street to G Street and 9th Street to 17th Street, Flood said.
