By the Lincoln Journal Star
Three Huskers were selected to the All-Big 12 team Tuesday.
Pitcher Johnny Dorn, second baseman Jake Opitz and catcher Mitch Abeita were chosen to the first team, marking the fourth time in the past six years that Nebraska had multiple first-team picks.
Senior pitcher Thad Weber was named to the second team after going 8-3 in his only season as full-time starter.
Infielder Craig Corristion, outfielder Bryce Nimmo and reliever Dan Jennings were named honorable mention.
Abeita, a Johnny Bench Award semifinalist, received first-team honors after leading the Huskers with a .343 average, nine home runs and 44 RBIs. He ranks among the Big 12 leaders in batting average, walks and on-base percentage, and has reached safely in 49 of 50 games.
Dorn nabbed first-team honors for a second time in his career. He finished among Big 12 leaders in strikeouts (93), ERA (2.55), innings (91½) and opponent batting average (.198).
Dorn is Nebraska’s first two-time first-team selection since Alex Gordon (2004-05).
Opitz is second on the team in batting (.327) and leads the team in runs (45).
Texas A&M’s Rob Childress was named Big 12 coach of the year. The former Husker assistant coach led the Aggies to the regular-season crown with a 19-8 mark, two years after the team finished last in the standings.
Texas A&M’s Jose Duran was named Big 12 player of the year. In his first year in the league, the junior led the Big 12 in batting average (.397) and in total bases.
Missouri junior pitcher Aaron Crow was named conference pitcher of the year after finishing the regular season 12-0.
Texas pitcher Chance Ruffin was named freshman of the year.
In unique fashion, Oklahoma State’s Jordy Mercer made the first team as a utility player, the second team as a shortstop and honorable mention as a reliever.
