CLASS A

TEAM RACE: Kearney appears poised to win another title. The Bearcats won 11 in a row before supplanted by Fremont, Omaha North and Omaha Central the last three years. In a comparison of district marks, Kearney scores at state in 15 of 17 events. Matt Trampe led the way in the 1,600 and Nate Polacek, Brett Maher and Caleb Brandt went 1-2-5 in the vault. Race for second should be between Omaha Benson, Millard West, Omaha North, Omaha Central and Lincoln Northeast.

ATHLETES TO WATCH: Nate Polacek and Brett Maher, Kearney, the only boys this season to post marks on the all-time charts. Polacek, the defending Gold medalist, leads the state with a vault of 16-0, tied for fourth all-time, and Maher has a best of 15-11, which is tied for seventh. Maher won the B vault last year at Centennial.

Stephon Washington, Omaha Central, is the defending champ in the 300 hurdles and is among the state leaders at :38.77.

Mitch Hunt and Jon Ronhovde, Fremont, Hunt is the state leader in both the 1,600 and 3,200 with Ronhovde second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200.

Cole Pensick and Jeff Bohlken, Lincoln Northeast, have pushed each other all year in the shot put. Bohlken, a UNO football recruit,  has a half-inch edge and leads A. Pensick, a junior, has already committed to a Nebraska football scholarship.

Porter Groves, Lincoln Northeast, leads state in the long jump and also qualified in the triple jump.

CLASS B

TEAM RACE: Plattsmouth, led by Adam and Andrew Mitteis, appears to have a comfortable advantage over the rest of the field. Adam, a senior, had the top time in the 800 and 3,200 in districts, while Andrew, a sophomore, was second in both the 400 and 800. Adam also had the best time this season in B in the 1,600. Cody Linder has the best leap in the B triple jump and is third-best in the long jump. Scottsbluff, Crete and Norfolk Catholic should challenge for second. Scottsbluff counts on sprinters with Daron Pattinson turning in the top 100 time and Cody Wilson the top 200 time in districts. Crete had top performances by Josh Wohl in the 400, John Levorson in the high jump and the 400 relay.

ATHLETES TO WATCH: Adam Mitteis, Plattsmouth, the defending B champion in the 1,600 will be gunning for the 800-1,600-3,200 trifecta.

Jessop Adams, Ogallala, defending 3,200 champion pulled away from Mitteis to earn the gold.

John Levorson, Crete, Nebraska football scholarship recruit leaped 6-71/4 in the district meet last week but pulled out of the final relay with pain in his leg.

Allen Osborn, Chadron, Kevin Paulsen, Pierce and Jonathan Love, Norfolk Catholic, could provide memorable races in the hurdles. Osborn has a :14.1 in the 110 highs, Paulsen a :14.2 and Love :14.3. They also have the top times in the 300s with Love leading at :38.2.

CLASS C

TEAM RACE: In district comparisons, Burwell edged Thayer Central  with West Holt, Dundy County-Stratton, Lincoln Christian and Deshler close behind. Burwell is led by Jacob Holmquist, who scored 24 points in the hurdles and pole vault. Thayer Central’s Seth Wiedel had the top long jump, was third in the triple jump and tied for the top time in the 200.

ATHLETES TO WATCH: Nicholas Kizzire, Bayard, C defending champion in the 3,200, Kizzire will also runs the 800 and 1,600.

Jase Dean, Bridgeport, won the C 100 and 400 as a sophomore and had the top time in both events in districts after missing last year’s state meet.

Jens Scholl, Deshler, recorded fastest time this season in C in three distance events.

Jacob Holmquist, Burwell, won the D pole vault last year and had the fastest time in districts in the 300 hurdles and the second-best marks in the 110 highs and vault.

Kaleb Henry, Loup City, defending discus champion turned in the top performance in districts.

CLASS D

TEAM RACE: With strong showings in the field events, Pawnee City appears to have a comfortable margin in the team race ahead of Humphrey St. Francis, St. Mary’s and Allen. Alexander Wood led the way in the pole vault with his younger brother, Caleb, tied for third. Bryan Austin had the second-best long jump. Keifer Burke of Maxwell, the overall state leader in the shot put at 57-10¼, won’t be competing at state. The senior had an emergency appendectomy the morning of districts.

ATHLETES TO WATCH: Jacob Kreikemeier, Dodge, the D defending champion in the 800, turned in the fastest time in districts.

Matthew Shipp, Bertrand, broke the D state record in the 800 with a time of 1:55.0 but has been out with a stress fracture. Last year’s all-class Gold medalist will run only the 400.

Dwayne Wall, Hampton, won the long jump last year and is among the Class D leaders in both the long and triple jump this year.
