Lincoln Lutheran boys win first district title
The windy conditions at the York Country Club tested the endurance of the Lincoln Lutheran boys golf team.
But the Warriors passed the test to win the C-1 District tournament Monday.
The tournament title gives Lutheran its first district title and the school’s first trip to the state tournament. The Warriors have been competing in boys golf for three years.
“We pulled off the big win under some pretty brutal conditions today,” first-year Warrior head coach Marty Haniszewski said. “It’s been kind of a tough year for us. A lot of kids have been fighting for (varsity) spots and they are all right close.
“It’s been an emotional battle for these kids. I’m just real proud of these kids.”
Lutheran finished with a 365, one stroke ahead of Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer (366). Superior was third with a 368. Lincoln Christian finished with a 444.
“Humboldt is a huge rival for us, and I told the guys if we could get them, that would be good,” Haniszewski said.
The Warriors, a team made up of sophomores and juniors, were led by Michael Tewes. Tewes finished third with an 83. Sophomore Ethan Walz shot an 89, finishing ninth.
Freshman Calvin Freeman of HTRS was the individual champion after carding a 79.
Christian’s Nick Weber qualified as an individual after finishing tied for 10th with a 91.
