Setters Jessica Way of Lincoln Southwest and Whitney Weyhrich of Lincoln North Star have signed national volleyball letters of intent with NCAA Division II programs.

Way is headed to Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, Fla., after earning first-team all-city and second-team Class A all-state honors last fall. The 5-8 Way averaged eight assists per game in leading the Silver Hawks to the state tournament.

On Wednesday, the 6-foot Weyhrich signed with Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn. Weyhrich was a second-team all-city and honorable mention all-state right side/setter last season. She led the Navigators in assists (5.4 per game) and ace serves (69), and was among the team leaders in blocks and kills.

Big Lincoln boys soccer game set for Friday

The Lincoln Southwest vs. Lincoln Southeast boys soccer game Friday should go a long way toward deciding the city champion, with each team having 2-0 records in city play.

Class A fifth-ranked Southwest (8-2) and No. 9 Southeast (7-2) will play at 5 p.m. at Abbott Sports Complex.

Lincoln North Star is 2-1, and East at 2-2. Southwest and Southeast each have wins against Lincoln East, and for the first time since 2002, the Spartans may not win the city title.

Lincoln Southeast coach Linda Wilson understands the significance of Friday’s game in the city landscape but says it may not be decided after that.

“We’ve played two (city games) and have three more to go, and you may have to win every one of them,” Wilson said. “There are other teams in the city that are playing really solid soccer as well.”

On the girls side of city play, a Southwest win against Southeast on Friday would put the Silver Hawks in prime position to win the city championship. Southwest is 2-0, East 3-1, North Star 2-1 and Southeast 1-1 in city games.
