Like the rest of the year, it was a shootout between Sidney's Kyle Huus and Gering's Austin Miller at the Class B State  High School Boys Golf Championship at Mahoney Golf Course.

The two exchanged wins in western Nebraska throughout the year. On Wednesday, however, Huus was able to hold on to his first-round lead and shot a 1-under 69 to edge Miller by three strokes for the state title.

Sidney won its first team title since 1991, holding off a late Scottsbluff charge.

Huus was 3-under for the two- day tournament and said the key to bringing home the title in his senior season was keeping big numbers off the scorecard.

"I didn't go at pins Ishouldn't have and just played to the middle of greens," Huus said. "Ijust played smart. I just wanted to be under par and score on the par-5s. I did."

Unlike Tuesday, the weather Wednesday was benign and scoring went down. After shooting a 35 on the front nine, Huus was able to separate himself from everyone except  Miller, who shot a 34 on the front and made the turn only two strokes behind Huus.

Huus was able to take charge  with birdies on the par-5 10th hole and par-3 12th to give him a four-stroke lead.

After giving one shot away at No. 14, Huus rebounded with a birdie on No. 15. He then locked it up on the 16th hole, two-putting for par, while Miller made bogey. That separation allowed Huus to bogey the 18th and still win by three strokes.

Although it became a two-man race, Huus said he didn't worry too much about what Miller was doing.

"I just wanted to play my own game," Huus said. "Iknew if Icould shoot under par, I had a good chance at winning."

Sidney entered the day with an 11-stroke lead over Scottsbluff, but the Bearcats made it interesting with a final-round 292.

The Red Raiders turned in a second-round 300 to hold off Scottsbluff by three strokes.

Sidney coach Jay Ehler said he's impressed with the strong showing by the western Nebraska teams.

"We played well for two days," Ehler said. "The back nine (on Tuesday) was kind of a deciding factor. We played well in the wind and got some cushion. We played well enough to win and I am really happy for western Nebraska."
