OMAHA — A north Omaha park has been named after Mildred Brown, the journalist who founded Nebraska’s largest black newspaper.

Brown started the Omaha Star in 1938, with the newspaper publishing only positive news about the black community. It is the only black newspaper still printed in the state.

The strolling park was dedicated in Brown’s honor on Thursday. A bronze bust of Brown has been installed there.

The Omaha Star, now run by Brown’s niece Marguerita Washington, reports circulation of about 30,000.
