York College president to retire
By the Lincoln Journal Star
York College said Friday it will soon launch a national search for a new president following Wayne Baker’s announcement that he will retire at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.
Baker, president since 1996, has had the third-longest tenure of York’s 19 presidents in the 118-year history of the small Christian college.
Upon his retirement, Baker will become York College’s chancellor, dedicating his energy to fundraising.
“I look forward to working closely with the (York College Board of) Trustees and the new designate in the years ahead for the success of this vitally important ministry in the Kingdom of God,” Baker said.
During his tenure, Baker has made community involvement a priority. He is a member of the York Chamber Board of Directors and is Ambassador for the City of York. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Independent College Foundation and chairman of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Under Baker’s leadership, York College has constructed a new dining hall and student center, two student apartments and an indoor sports practice facility, and renovated its science hall and prayer chapel. The college also has advanced its academic programs, now offering more than 40 bachelor degrees and disciplines of study.
The college estimates its economic impact on the York community is $25 million per year.
