The Lancaster County Board unanimously approved Mayor Chris Beutler’s request to use $750,000 in lodging taxes on West Haymarket improvement efforts.

The money will fund a list of studies the city needs as it makes its way toward next spring’s public vote on a proposed arena.

In total, the preliminary work is expected to cost $3 million, said Kent Morgan, the city’s assistant planning director. 2015 Vision, a group of private business leaders, committed $1.65 million. The city will contribute $600,000.

The story so far: A new arena

More than three years ago, a group of Lincoln leaders began talking seriously about the prospect of building a new events arena to replacing the city'...

The County Board’s vote Thursday follows a recommendation earlier this month by the Visitors Promotion Committee. The committee, made up of community members with ties to tourism, is responsible for offering input to the county on how it should spend lodging tax collections.

Commissioner Deb Schorr’s voice wavered as she talked about her daughter, who as part of a Leadership Lincoln youth project, had to pick an important topic to talk about involving the future.

She picked the arena.

“To me, it’s very important,” she said.

Commissioner Ray Stevens said he’d prefer the money not go toward efforts tied to the arena, a private hotel project and road infrastructure. He’d rather the money be spent on other West Haymarket improvements, including plans for indoor and outdoor recreation areas.

Commissioner Larry Hudkins also raised the point the board needs to take care not to deplete the pot.

Thursday’s decision will draw down about half the amount of collected lodging taxes. That pot draws $800,000 to $900,000 annually.

The county has approved only one other large funding request — $500,000 last summer for an expansion project at the Lancaster Event Center.

" Oh for Pete's sake, why don't you just start breaking ground on this thing and get it over with!! It seems like regardless of what the studies say and what the public wants a new arena will be coming, so save the cash and just get it started already. Why don't you use this money towards cleaning the toxic ground and making an earnest payment to the railroad to start planning for moving the tracks? That would be a better use. "

" I agree with NS. It's like the jail - the city wants it built, so why bother writing and asking opinions about it. BUILD IT, don't worry, we'll end up paying for it anyway "

" Lodging taxes are great! (almost) no one in the city pays them, but gets to reap the benefits. As long as they aren't prohibitively large, they don't discourage tourism and conferences/conventions that are responsible for the revenue stream. Heck I say raise the lodging tax, Grand Island's and Omaha's are both higher. That's free money out there just waiting for us. "

" lincoln voted this mayor in to lead. he's leading, now everyone is complaining about spending money on downtown economic development. the citizens of lincoln are so small minded its incredible. why is so hard to accept the fact that people with money will drive the community. "

" I agree with NS. Remember the jail bond issue just voted on? The arena and hotel will be exactly the same thing. You can vote for it and have taxes spread out over 25 years or vote against it and pay it off in 10. No need to vote folks, this thing is settled. My god, what I wouldn't give to live in lincoln again. I just can't believe the taxpayers haven't had riots in the street. How much are the middle and lower class willing to put up with? Lincoln does and always has been a place for the wealthy to live. NOtice the young folks graduate and move the hell out. They can't afford it. The city will soon learn the older folks can't afford it either when they start leaving. I sell real estate (not in lincoln) and almost never a day goes by that I don't hear from someone from lincoln who is considering moving out when the social security kicks in. The city bosses just don't care either and thats the bad part. As long as they have gooooooood friends like 2015 who make them feel inviceble. "
