“Thank you, Governor. And thank you for your support.

“Thank you to my family – especially my wife Stephanie – and thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers from all across Nebraska. Without you we wouldn’t be here tonight.

“My friends, we are just getting started. From Omaha to Scottsbluff, Kearney, Fremont, Columbus, McCook, Hastings and all across this state, I’m going to campaign tirelessly for Republicans, Democrats and Independents to join this campaign.

“Tonight is a big win, but we’re only half-way to the finish line with a lot of work ahead of us.

“We will work hard to earn every vote and we won’t take a single vote for granted.

“I feel a sense of urgency in this campaign because the issues facing our state and our nation are so important, and the choices facing voters in this election are equally important.

“Tonight, I ask you to stand with me.

“If you believe we need to fix Washington, come join our campaign.

“If you believe federal spending is out of control and hard-working Nebraskans deserve to keep more of what they earn, come join our campaign.

“If you believe gas prices are too high and that we need a long-term energy policy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, come join our campaign.

“If you believe the growing cost of health care is a problem and that bigger government is not the solution, come join our campaign.

“If you believe our men and women in uniform deserve not only our respect but our support, come join our campaign.

“And if you believe in protecting life, traditional marriage and in supporting judges who respect the Constitution, come join our campaign.

“My pledge to you is to run a positive campaign, just like I’ve always done. It will be a campaign about the issues and about working together to solve problems.

“You see, I simply don’t believe you have to tear the other guy down to prove your point. There can and will be honest differences of opinion on issues – and discussing those issues is an important part of any campaign.

“But when you go to the polls on Election Day, November 4, I want you to be proud to cast your vote for Mike Johanns.

“I need your help in this campaign if you believe as I do that we must fix Washington. You have told me you are tired of the partisan bickering and the gridlock. You want to see Congress work across the aisle to tackle the big issues of our day. So do I. That is my proven record as Mayor, as a Governor and in the Cabinet, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“If you believe like I do that Congress has lost it’s way when it comes to federal spending, I need your help in this campaign. You have told me it’s past time that Washington learned to live within its means – and I could not agree more. As Mayor, I worked with the city council to turn a budget deficit into a budget surplus. And as Governor we led our state through the post-9/11 recession by setting priorities. It is my proven record, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“I need your help in this campaign if you believe like I do that Nebraska families, small business owners, farmers and ranchers know better how to spend their hard-earned money than does Washington. 650,000 Nebraskans benefited from the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, yet they are set to expire over the next few years. I supported tax relief and opposed tax increases as Governor, and I will fight to make the 2001 and the 2003 tax cuts permanent. It is my proven record, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“I need your help in this campaign if you believe like I do that energy independence is as much an economic security issue as a national security issue. For too long our national energy policy has been based on three words NO, NO, NO. No exploration and drilling, no substantial investment in nuclear power, and no long-term strategy to reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. It’s time to say yes to an energy policy that puts America first. It is my proven record, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“If you believe like I do that a government-run health care system would threaten the quality and availability of our health care, create another federal bureaucracy and impose a one-size-fits-all approach upon our state, I need your help in this campaign. We have good health care in Nebraska and with targeted reforms that address accessibility, portability and affordability, we can make the system even better. I’ll fight the one-size-fits-all, government take-over that may work for LA or NY, but would harm the quality of care here in Nebraska. It is my proven record, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“I need your help in this campaign if you believe like I do that our men and women in uniform deserve our respect and our support. I support their mission, and whether you agree or disagree with the War in Iraq, we must support our troops and give them the tools they need to finish their mission. We must also support our military families and our veterans with services and benefits that reflect their honorable service and sacrifice. It is my proven record, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“And if you believe like I do in protecting the unborn and defending traditional marriage, I need your help in this campaign. To help defend our families and our values, we need federal judges who interpret the law and not judges who legislate from the bench. I support life, traditional marriage and judges who respect the Constitution and the rule of law. It is my proven record, and you can trust that is how I will lead in the U.S. Senate.

“The issues confronting our state and nation are too important for us to sit on the sidelines in this election. There is much work to be done, but I can not do it without you.

“I often tell my grandchildren they live in a country where they have the opportunity to do anything they want as they grow older, because this is America. Our freedoms and our opportunities have allowed a boy who grew up on a dairy farm to stand here tonight running for the U.S. Senate.

“With your help, we can win this election. I’ll take Nebraska with me to Washington where every day, I’ll fight for our values, protect our freedoms and ensure we leave this nation a better place for generations to come.

“Together, we will ensure the future of our state and of our great nation. May God bless you, our state and our country. Thank you and good night.“
