Police say several apartment tenants on Monday afternoon caught one of two men they allegedly spotted stealing from unlocked cars.

They held Andrew Vanek, 28, who police arrested on suspicion of burglary. Officer Katie Flood said the second man got away. He was described as an 18- or 19-year-old white man, 6-feet tall and 140 pounds.

Flood said the two were believed to have been responsible for thefts from nine cars parked in the Bicentennial Estates area, near 14th and Superior streets. The loss was $1,450, including the value of a laptop.

She said some of the items were recovered, but not all.

Chief Tom Casady said Vanek is a sex offender, convicted in Wisconsin in 1998 and required to register for life.
