Schell: Exercise mind, body, spirit
Candidate Curtis Schell in five:
1. I am a born-again Christian.
2. I am a single father with custody of my 16-year-old daughter Taylor Lynn. The greatest achievement in my life has been watching my daughter grow and mature.
3. I am enjoying reading “America’s God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations,” by William Federer, with quotes from the founding fathers, presidents, statesmen, scientists, the Constitution and court decisions.
4. When I get to watch TV, I watch MSNBC, the Unicameral when it is in session and 5 City TV.
5. I won the Mr. Nebraska body building competition in 1993. I am competitive and like to exercise my mind, body and spirit.
Republican Schell, 43, works as a corrections officer for both the state and Lancaster County. He is a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.
On the campaign trail:
The campaign for Schell is a great opportunity to listen to citizens and share God’s love, he said.
His campaign has largely been about debates such as those sponsored by the Nebraska Farm Bureau, the League of Women Voters and Fathers’ Rights of Nebraska, and sitting down with groups such as the Lincoln Independent Business Association.
In visiting homes in the district, he is finding people are discouraged with politics. Sometimes he finds only three people in a block of houses who say they are voters.
Their main concerns are property taxes and wages. In his district they are also concerned about water conservation and regulation of wells and basins. They also want to ensure water is monitored and protected from contaminants.
Q: Should the state have a role in the (illegal) immigration issue? If so, what specific legislation or bill might you propose?
A: The state needs to do its part to minimize or eliminate terrorism activity and illegal immigration in Nebraska. And it needs to help relieve the financial burden that undocumented immigrants place on the state.
The state could help out in the use of satellite computer software to track foreign travelers beginning in international airports. It could also ensure people have the proper documentation with work visas, Social Security numbers and green cards.
Companies should be held accountable for doing background checks on workers. And the state should enforce immigration and Patriot Act laws already on the books.
Q: How can the state address high property taxes?
A: Lower property taxes, improve our business environment and reduce government expense.
