The community service hours just keep adding up for Wesley Obermier, an Eagle Scout and FFA State Degree holder.

Wes did a lot of community service last summer serving as a camp counselor and aquatics aid at the Boy Scout Camp in Humboldt for about six weeks. He put in another 100 hours revitalizing an overgrown, abandoned cemetery in a cornfield for his Eagle Scout project.

“If you see pictures, it’s mind-boggling,” he said.

Wes also spent several hours with his troop repainting wooden barriers at the entrances to York’s local parks. He continues to help with monthly paper recycling drives his troop does in York, where he lives.

“You don’t realize it when you’re doing it, but when you add it (community service hours) up at the end of the year, it’s pretty staggering,” Wes said.

He’s also done a lot of community service with FFA, which requires State Degree applicants to participate in a minimum of 10 school or community activities during their FFA involvement. The McCool Junction senior received his State Degree Award this year, a first for the newly chartered McCool Junction FFA chapter.

Last year, when McCool Junction shared an agricultural instructor with Filmore Central, Wes helped with projects in Geneva such as mulching around the nursing home and repainting a concession stand at the ball park.

FFA adviser Dana Hall said Wes has been a great help getting the chapter started in his role as vice president. She nominated him for the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award given by Monsanto in recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership and agricultural work experience.

Hall said Wes is a quiet leader who tries to get the younger chapter members involved.

“He’s just always willing to help, no matter what the job. It doesn’t matter if it’s a fun job or not-so-fun job,” Hall said.
