Millard South advances to title game
OMAHA — You’d better believe it was one of the best goals of Devon Strecker’s soccer career.
“Even if it didn’t look pretty,” the Millard South senior said. “We’re in the state championship.”
Strecker scored in the 56th minute to spark the sixth-ranked Patriots’ 1-0 upset of top-ranked Millard West in the Class A boys state tournament semifinals Saturday.
Millard South will play Omaha Creighton Prep in Tuesday’s championship match. Millard South beat Prep 2-0 earlier this season.
It was great passes by Michael Trogdon and Jacob Novak that set up Strecker’s team-leading 17th goal.
Neither team held an advantage in the match.
“We didn’t have many shots on them the whole game, and we just had to capitalize on the ones we did,” Strecker said. “We did that.”
Millard West had four decent scoring chances in the final 10 minutes, including a last chance with 40 seconds left. But Patriot keeper Daniel Whithorn and his defenders kept coming up big.
Millard West had beaten Millard South 4-2 in overtime earlier this season to take the top spot in the rankings from the Patriots.
The Patriots were able to stop Millard West this time, which had two of the top scorers in the state in Aaron Galley and Thomas Heavey.
“Our defense stepped it up this time and took care of us,” Strecker said.
Millard South will be trying to win its first state title in three trips to the finals.
Creighton Prep 2, Columbus 1
Andrew Hasebroock headed a ball into corner of the net with eight minutes remaining to send No. 7 Creighton Prep to its seventh state title match.
On the winning score, Matthew Hergenrader headed the ball to Hasebroock. The goal came only nine minutes after the Discoverers’ Andy Christensen tied the match.
