Letters, 5/10: Primary vote important

Saturday, May 10, 2008 - 12:21:36 am CDT

The Democratic caucus held earlier this year deprived many of us of our vote. Only a small percentage of Nebraska voters attended the caucus and voted, which is not a true representation.

So it is extremely important for each of us to go and cast our vote in the primary next week. The results of the primary will show which Democratic candidate the majority of Nebraskans want for their nominee. The delegates and superdelegates should take note, and I’m sure they will.

It is a very close race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Every registered Democrat needs to vote, and have their vote counted, too.

Dorothy A. Kubick, Lincoln

Scott shows dedication

Susan Scott is the dedicated leader we need representing Lincoln in the Legislature. Susan is a small business owner and active community volunteer. She is a true teacher, in the classroom and out, encouraging others to volunteer and support community agencies that play a vital role in providing a safety net for those in need.

I must note that Susan has demonstrated extreme perseverance by completing every Lincoln Marathon since its inception. I know she will use this type of dedication in her work as the next state senator from District 29.

Jerrod P. Jaeger, Lincoln

Scott seeks to unite

When the Ku Klux Klan came to Nebraska several years ago, the residents of Lincoln responded by hosting an event at Pioneers Park to demonstrate support for our diverse community and opposition to racism. The “No Place for Hate” rally was spearheaded by Susan Scott, then executive director of the YWCA, and current candidate for the Nebraska Legislature in District 29.

As a state senator, I know Susan Scott will demonstrate the same type of leadership she has shown in her career and community service. For more than 30 years, Susan has proved she will stand up for those in need and fight those who want to divide.

For her work on the “No Place for Hate” rally, Susan was recognized by the Nebraska State Holocaust Commemoration for her efforts to combat racism and discrimination.

This type of leadership and dedication to bettering our community and our nation is just what we need from a state senator.

Jeffers truly cares

James Arthur Jeffers is the kind of person we want for our state senator for District 21.

There are not many politicians left who truly care about the issues.  Jim is a man who listens to the concerns of others and is quick to form a strong opinion either way. I have never had to wonder where he stands on something; he is very quick to tell you his position.

Putting time and energy into a job is something he is very familiar with. We don’t have to question whether he is working for us; he is, and will take the state Legislature position very seriously.

As a mother of two small children, I am concerned about the state of our government as my kids grow up in Nebraska. It is important for us to pay attention to the men/women running for Legislature. They are making decisions that could one day affect our children.

Knowing someone like him is willing to speak up for the conservative Republicans of Nebraska makes me hopeful in the future of our government. We should be so fortunate to have someone like him in office.

Haar gets things done

Lincoln needs an experienced leader representing us in the state Legislature. We are fortunate to have Ken Haar running to become the next state senator from District 21, which includes a large portion of Northwest Lincoln.

As a Lincoln city councilman, Ken Haar provided leadership to build a fire station on N.W. First Street, the Highlands Swimming Pool and Golf Course and Eiseley Library on Superior Street. Ken Haar knows that safety and quality-of-life measures, like parks and libraries, are critical to the future of a growing Lincoln.

Ken also supported retail zoning for the shopping center at 27th and Superior streets.

Ken will protect Lincoln jobs and support measures to strengthen our economy, just as that project in the 1990s helped increase sales tax revenues for the capital city.

In order to ensure that Lincoln receives its fair share of funding from the state, we need a leader who knows how to get things done.  Ken Haar has proved that he is the leader we need representing District 21 in the state Legislature.

Stop the monopoly

The situation in which we, citizens of the United States, find ourselves in 2008 is the result of the federal government’s loose fiscal policy for the past 50 years. In addition, we have a credit crisis, and we are finding ourselves in bondage to the greedy bankers and politicians who have sold their soul to the banks and the huge corporations.

It would appear to me that our nation is on the slippery slope and moving at an accelerating rate “from dependency and bondage (dictatorship and slavery),” in the words of Sir Alex Fraser Tytler, the Scottish jurist and historian.

In this election year we, citizens, better take a long, hard look at the men and women who are candidates for president and Congress.

It appears to me that Ron Paul is the only candidate for president on the Nebraska primary election ballot who by his past voting record is willing to be committed to honoring the U.S. Constitution.  We must elect people to Congress who are willing to take the steps necessary to eliminate the Federal Reserve Bank, because it is the creator of the monopoly money we call the U.S. dollar.

During the past three months the value of the U.S. dollar, when compared with the euro, has fallen considerably. It won’t be very long before the dollar actually will be monopoly money.

Marvin will work for families

On May 13 I will be supporting Dan Marvin for Legislature in District 27.

On the Lincoln City Council, Dan has been an advocate for issues that matter to families. Dan has worked to ensure stronger, safer neighborhoods, held the line on property taxes and worked to create jobs. I know Dan will continue to work for families in the Nebraska Legislature.

With term limits, we need experienced leaders who can hit the ground running to work on the issues that matter to families. I am confident Dan Marvin is that leader.

Catholic Dems for Kleeb

I met Scott Kleeb in 2006 when I walked into his field office to volunteer. Since then, he has become a friend and someone I trust will not only represent our values in the U.S. Senate, but will never turn his back on us or his duties as a senator.

We need great thinkers, good neighbors, in our government again. For too long business interest has taken over the halls of Congress.

I and other Catholic Democrats will support Scott Kleeb on May 13.

Stephanie Retzlaff Leeding, Doniphan

Barrett is listening

I have just been reviewing the candidates for legislative District 21. After considering all six candidates, I will vote for Vern Barrett.

The deciding factor for me is found in his campaign slogan, which states as follows: “When you listen to the voices of the people, you begin to understand the challenges of the future.” He is the only candidate who has made this type of an observation.

I urge all of the eligible voters of District 21 to do the same.

Gary L. Hellerich, Valparaiso

" Held the line on property taxes????? What a joke. If this is what you feel is holding the line on taxes, I would really not like to see waht you would call tax increases. I would encourage everyone to vote against anyone who was/is on the city council for ANY office. "

" Ron Paul? I didn't know we could send in jokes to the Letters page and have them printed... "

" Phillip,
It's great to finally see extra support for Ron Paul. It's truly a shame that the mainstream media keeps ignoring him. I hope the Ron Paul supporters come out in full force to show the nation that there truly is a better way. "

" jmk Do you know anything about your City government The only property tax Dan Marvin manages is the City portion of about 14 cents per dollar. It has not increased. The only way your tax went up is because you were re-assessed under fair market value assessment. If it went up very much you weren't paying enough before.
Dan Marvin along with the rest of City Council is running the City into the ground because they are not giving the City government enough money to work with and things are falling apart. "

" those of you who pay fair market value to determine taxes, I feel for you. I left that type of taxation 5 years ago. I now pay 19% of the county assessment which is much less than fair market value. Wow is't no wonder the people complain. I guess I should smile when I now pay my property tax.. "

" Nice try Dorothy, but it is over, and Obama will be the nominee. But democrats due need to turn out for the other races. Maybe that was your motivation. "

" Yes it is time to vote. The Democratic caucus is a joke it is somthing that should be done away with. They should have one primary on the same day. That would show who the people really want not the party bosses. "

ajb wrote on May 10, 2008 8:48 pm:
" Dorothy, I agree we all need to get out and vote on Tuesday, but you are mistaken about the caucus. More Democrats went to the caucus in Feb. than have voted in any primary or general election in Nebraska in many years. Our vote at the caucus did count and since it was held so early in the election cycle it had more impact than it has at any time in my not so short lifetime. I for one hope Nebraska Democrats continue to show up in the kinds of numbers we had at the caucus. It is time for us to take our state and country back from the mis-guided and reckless Republicans. "

" I agree with TS. This whole primary selection/scheme leaves one feeling frustrated and helpless. A one day single NATIONAL primary could be a very good thing. Oh well, dream on. MONEY RULES! "

Laurie wrote on May 12, 2008 9:36 am:
" Dorothy.. if the caucus was poorly attended (which it was not), that is a direct result of Nebraskan's not being interested. When American Idol turns out more voters than a political campaign we know where peoples interests are. "
