The Lincoln Lutheran girls and boys track teams sat down together before competing at the C-2 district meet having just one goal in mind.

They wanted to come together and finish as a combination team runner-up.

And that’s just what the Warriors did Thursday in Tecumseh, finishing second behind Lincoln Christian.

The Crusader boys tallied 117 points, while Lutheran had 93. Johnson County Central was third (84½). Lutheran’s second-place finish was the highest district finish in school history.

“Lincoln Christian just ran away from us today,” Lincoln Lutheran coach Sue Ziegler said. “They had the depth in both the running and field events, while we’re more of a solid running team.”

The Lincoln Christian girls finished with 175 points, followed by Lutheran with 91. Lourdes Central Catholic was third with 85.

“We knew the girls (district title) was probably not within our reach,” Ziegler said. “But for the boys and girls, our goal was to get runner-up.

“The kids were excited to meet that goal. I’m pretty excited about taking this bunch to state next week.”

Senior Andrew Hamann won the 200- and 400-meter runs for the Warriors and finished second in the 100, just behind Christian’s Parker Moore.

In the girls meet, the Crusaders won eight events. Sophomore Sarah Plambeck won the 400 and 800 and also ran on the winning 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams.

Freshman Joelle Anderson won the long jump and triple jumps and competed on the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams.

“We were really pleased with both performances of the boys and girls,” Ziegler said. “We have qualified (for state) in 15 events for sure, which is more than we’ve ever qualified in past years. We just had some great performances today.”

B-2 at Plattsmouth

In the B-2 district in Plattsmouth, Waverly’s Anne Martin won three events to lead the Vikings to a second-place finish. Norris won with 95 points, while Waverly finished with 91.

Martin won the long jump (16 feet, 7¾ inches), high jump (5-5) and 200 (24.9 seconds).

Plattsmouth, led by Adam and Andrew Mitteis, who combined to win four individual events, won the boys title with 154 points, Syracuse was second with 89, and  Waverly third (77).

" I found it strange that a Lincoln team who won both meets gets very little coverage. Lincoln Christian boys almost had twice as many points as Lincoln Lutheran's boys and they barely get mentioned. "

" So, Christian wins the meet and you use Lutheran in the title? "

" I would think both LINCOLN Teams should be mentioned in a title hailing the results of a local district meet. Both Lincoln Christian and Lincoln Lutheran had excellent team results and worked very hard. It seems strange to single out and highlight only the team that took second place. That being said, congratulations to both Lincoln Lutheran and Lincoln Christian boys and girls! Not only did you both do well, your team spirit and sportmanship with eachother and the other teams spoke well for you both! "

" I agree with "Weird Title." I didnt mean to down grade Lincoln Lutheran's performance. They did a great job at the meet as well. "

" As a supporter of Lincoln Lutheran I appreciate the headline on this story. But what an insult to the athletes and supporters of Lincoln Christian. Our community should be proud of the success of both programs and the headline should have reflected that. "

" I have to say I was disappointed in the article of the district track meet. Many people ONLY skim headlines and by the printed article in the paper, the headline wouldn't have even indicated that Lincoln Christian was a pariticpant at the meet. Both teams are to be commended, both from Lincoln as well, but to not even have reasonable coverage when you were the WINNER in both events, (which doesn't seem to happen very often in many sports), seems quite bizarre. Hopefully a followup artcle will do it justice. "
