The Nebraska softball team got clutch hits when it mattered the most in the first game of a doubleheader against Kansas on Wednesday at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers won the first game 5-4, but then lost the nightcap 6-3.

In the first game, freshman Heidi Foland fouled off three two-strike pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning before ripping an RBI single to center. That sparked a rally, as the next three Huskers followed with singles, including Brittany Pascale’s pinch-hit game-winning hit.

The victory, combined with Tuesday’s win against Iowa State, gave Nebraska (21-26, 3-13) more conference wins in two days than it had recorded all season.

In the nightcap, freshman Ashley Guile hit her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score 3-3, but the Jayhawks scored three runs in the eighth to salvage a split of the doubleheader.

The Huskers stranded 10 runners through the first seven innings, including six in scoring position. NU stranded two more in the eighth, as junior Crystal Carwile, the Huskers' leading home run hitter, came to the plate having homered five times in her last nine games, but she struck out swinging to end the game.

Both teams struggled in the early going, as three first-inning errors led to a pair of Kansas runs and one Husker score.

Nebraska wraps up the regular season with a pair of home games against Missouri on Saturday and Sunday.
