NU news: Freshman Coatman eighth at Big 12 golf
MEN’S GOLF: Nebraska freshman Mike Coatman shot a 1-under-par 71 Saturday and was tied for eighth after the third round of the Big 12 Championships at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
Coatman, a Lincoln Southwest graduate, is at even-par 216 heading into Sunday’s final round.
The Huskers finished with a team score of 305, falling to 10th with a 908 total. Defending champion Oklahoma State leads with an 850.
WOMEN’S GOLF: Nebraska’s Elli Brown shot a 3-over 75 to climb six spots into a tie for seventh after two rounds at the Big 12 Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Brown, a senior from Meridian, Idaho, led the fifth-place Huskers to a 317 to help Nebraska (643) pull within three strokes of fourth-place Texas. Oklahoma State remains at the top after a 302 Saturday. The Cowgirls are at 605.
“Scoring conditions were a little better today,” NU coach Robin Krapfl said. “The greens slowed down a little bit and it wasn’t as windy as it was yesterday, so I think you could see that in the scores as the golfers made their adjustments to the course.”
BOWLING: Former Husker Shannon Pluhowsky is tied with another former Husker, Jennifer Murphy of Clarksville, Tenn., after the first day of qualifying in the United States Bowling Congress Queens in Canton, Ohio.
After five games, Pluhowsky has a qualifying scored of 1,132. The three-time U.S. Amateur champion and collegiate star at Nebraska had games of 231, 185, 258, 257 and 201 to lead the field of 337 of the best women bowlers in the world competing for an overall prize fund of $200,000.
Murphy, who led the Huskers to national titles in 1997 and 1999, also put together a solid set, rolling games of 202, 267, 223, 215 and 225 to move into a tie for the lead.
