NU news: Ping to play for Emporia State
Former Nebraska forward Shang Ping has signed with Emporia State, an NCAA Division II school in Kansas. The Hornets lose five starters from a team that went 14-16 last season. “We’re at a level where Shang should be one of the better players on our team and in our league,” ESU coach David Moe said. “He wanted to go to a level where he knew he could he successful.” Ping played one season at Nebraska and announced earlier this month he was transferring.
TRACK: At the KU Relays, Nebraska’s Zach Holoch won the men’s pole vault by more than 5 inches with a vault of 16 feet, ¾ inch. Teammate Patrick Burke tied for second at 15-7. The NU men also won the shuttle hurdle and 800 relays, the 3,000 steeplechase (David Adams, 9:20.64) and the shot put (Keith Lloyd, 55-3¾). NU’s Mikel Thomas was third in the steeplechase (9:36.14), Trey Jordan third in the shot put (54-6) and Chris Nuttleman (49-9) sixth in the triple jump. For the NU women, Kim Shubert won the high jump with a leap of 5-8¾ and Kayla Wilkinson the javelin with a throw of 174 feet. Nebraska was second in both the shuttle hurdle and 800 relays. NU’s Epley Bullock was fourth in the high jump (5-7), and Zarinah Suluki-Drakes (41-1½), Danielle Smith (39-5¾) and Leandra McGruder (37-9½) were second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the triple jump.
TENNIS: The Nebraska women fell to 15-6 overall and 4-6 in the Big 12 after dropping a 4-3 decision at Kansas. It’s the third 4-3 loss the Huskers have suffered in Big 12 play this spring. The Huskers close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. home match Sunday at the Nebraska Tennis Center against Kansas State. ... The Husker men (10-14, 0-5 in Big 12) won just one set in dropping a 7-0 decision at No. 13 Baylor. The Huskers finish the regular season at Oklahoma Sunday.
