The Nebraska women’s tennis team’s first 13 victories were either 6-1 or 7-0 blowouts.

The No. 67 Huskers are now showing they can win the close matches as well.

NU bounced back from losing the doubles point by capturing five competitive singles matches in taking a 5-2 victory against Missouri on Friday indoors at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers bring a 15-4 overall record and 4-4 mark in the Big 12 into a home match against Colorado at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Nebraska snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-3 win at Oklahoma last Sunday, and the Huskers continued their success in tight situations against the Tigers (9-11, 1-7).

“We responded really well after the doubles,’’ NU coach Scott Jacobson said. “There’s no lack of heart in our team, and that shows in the results in our last two matches. They believe in each other so much, and that means a lot in situations like this.’’

NU was led in singles by freshman Amber Chandronnait, who overcame a pulled stomach muscle late in the first set to outlast Kaitlyn Ritchie 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5. Chandronnait improved to 14-3 this spring with the win.

“To keep getting it done playing in pain shows the determination she has,” said Jacobson, who was unsure if Chandronnait would be able to play Sunday. “It takes a lot to yank her off the court.”

NU’s top singles player, Imke Reimers, needed three sets to defeat Mallory Weber 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 as she moved to 15-4 this spring. Husker teammate Wiveca Swarting pulled out a tight 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 triumph at No. 2 against Jessica Giuggioli.

A&M men down NU

Despite Nebraska victories against ranked opponents at No. 1 and 2 singles, No. 21 Texas A&M won everything else in taking a 5-2 victory over the Huskers Friday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center.

NU sophomore David Bendheim knocked off No. 15 Connor Pollock 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 singles, while freshman teammate Calin Paar took out No. 90 Wil Spencer 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. The Huskers (9-12 overall, 0-3 in the Big 12) almost pulled off the upset as Francoise Van Impe pushed A&M’s Chris Chirico to the limit at No. 4 singles before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Karl Jones fell to the Aggies’ Kayvon Karimi 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6.

“The great thing about David and Calin is they’re not afraid of anyone,’’ said NU coach Kerry McDermott, whose team dropped all three doubles matches to give the Aggies the doubles point.

“Hopefully that will rub off on the other guys on the team. Just like last week, we played pretty well, but we have nothing to show for it.”

The Huskers are at No. 20 Texas Tech on Sunday.
