Creighton softball players and fans had their cell phones out and were taking pictures of Bowlin Stadium’s scoreboard after Wednesday’s game against Nebraska.

Although the Bluejays have had the Huskers’ number recently, they might have needed proof,  because it’s hard to believe they  defeated the Huskers 13-1 in a five-inning game.

“I told them I expected more out of them, but this was unexpected,” Creighton coach Brent Vigness said. “I’m just proud of the way our kids played.”

Counting the Bluejays’ 7-2 win vs. Nebraska earlier in Omaha, Creighton has outscored the Huskers 20-3 this year.

This loss was also the Huskers’ worst at Bowlin Stadium.

Besides freshman Kelli Linke’s first career home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, nothing went right for the Huskers.

“I’d like to change a lot of things,” Nebraska coach Rhonda Revelle said. “I’d like to change how we’re pitching. I’d like to change how we’re playing defense, and I’d like to change how we’re hitting. There’s not one part of our game that’s consistent.”

The Husker offense only managed two hits off Creighton ace Tara Oltman, while the defense committed four errors.

The Huskers didn’t have success in the circle either. The Bluejays knocked junior pitcher Molly Hill out of the game in the third after scoring eight runs on seven hits.

Sophomore Alex Hupp didn’t fare much better and gave up five earned runs in 22/3 innings. Hill gave up four walks and Hupp surrendered three. Hupp also threw a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.

The walks and defensive lapses obviously didn’t help the Huskers’ cause.

“When we help them, the score is reflective of that,” Revelle said.

The loss dropped the Huskers to 16-19. They now will need to get on a hot streak in order to reach the NCAA Tournament for the 14th consecutive year.

Yes, these are uncharted waters for the Huskers. It also is new experience for Revelle. Recently,  Revelle became one of only 48 coaches to reach the 600-win milestone.

Despite the recent struggles, Revelle and the Huskers vow to keep fighting and will try to get everything together in the season’s final stretch.

“This is kind of a new area for me as a coach,” Revelle said. “I’m searching for answers to many of these questions along with other people. It’s my job to find them. I understand that. It’s just not happening. The answers aren’t coming as quickly as I’d like for them to do.”
