Abortions in Lincoln and Council Bluffs, Iowa, have been temporarily halted due to a leave of absence by a key member of the Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs medical staff.

Bobbie Kierstead, spokesperson for Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs, said abortion services were suspended sometime in the past few weeks and would return soon — which she defined as a matter of weeks. “(It) doesn’t mean three months from now.”

Kierstead said she could not provide more information about the person on leave, citing human resources privacy issues.

“It very definitely is temporary,” Kierstead said of the suspension of services.

News of the temporary halt was included in the May issue of Vital Signs, a publication of Lincoln Right to Life.

The pamphlet said: “The Planned Parenthood abortion facilities in Lincoln and Council Bluffs, Iowa, have apparently suspended abortion appointments. We are not certain as to the circumstances, or as to how long this may last but we celebrate the wonderful news that lives are not taken at either location.”

Kierstead said Planned Parenthood maintains two health centers in Lincoln providing a full range of reproductive health care, and abortions are provided at one of them.

A call to Lincoln Right to Life was not answered.

" I'm thankful for this lull in abortions. I'm not going to go on a rampage about how its wrong, but now, babies are given the chance to live long enough that maybe abortions can't be done. I don't care what a person's reason is for an abortion, I feel that its wrong and its murder. "

" I would like to see further research into why the abortion facility is closed. Is it unsafe for women to go there? Are there problems with the service that was being provided? "

" I also heard about this a while ago. I have been wondering why the facility is closed and how long it will stay that way. I too am thankful that they are closed at the moment. "

" I agree. If there is any more information about why the facility has temporarily shut down I would like to know. It concerns me, especially if it was for a reason connected to safety. "

" I rejoice that perhaps a few babie's lives will be saved during this time that the Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinic is closed. Who knows what these children will grow up to contribute to the world. "

" More details on this botched abortion are needed here. Are charges being filed? Are women safe? It sounds like there is another whole story behind the few details here. "
