Megan Pendergast didn’t like it when college coaches on the recruiting trail asked her what she did for fun.

“My answer was always volleyball,” Nebraska’s newest recruit said Monday. “I guess I’m not that well-rounded.”

Pendergast, a 5-foot-6 outside hitter, accepted a scholarship offer to join Nebraska as a libero for the 2009 season. The junior from Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, was spotted by new NU assistant Erik Sullivan during a club tournament in Denver.

She made her visit to Nebraska in April and said she couldn’t turn down the opportunity to play in a tradition-rich program.

“I had offers to play as an outside hitter in college, but I wasn’t looking to settle for just anything,” Pendergast said.

Playing last season at Clear Creek, located between Houston and Galveston, Pendergast averaged 4.1 kills and 4.1 digs per game. She said she’s known best for her intensity.

“I love to compete,” she added. “I was looking to play at the highest level possible and Nebraska was that place for me.”

Pendergast wouldn’t say if Nebraska coaches had asked her to play as a walk-on at any point during her tenure, a common practice with other recent defensive specialists to play at NU.

Pendergast will sign her letter of intent in November along with Nebraska’s other 2009 recruits: outside hitters Hannah Werth from Chatham, Ill., and Gina Mancuso of Papillion-La Vista.
