On her more than 60-mile commute to work from Sterling to Ashland each morning, Dottie Heusman drives through Eagle.
As of July 1, she’ll cut that commute almost in half when she starts her new job as principal at Eagle Elementary — one of three elementary buildings in the Waverly Public Schools District.
Heusman, who now serves as the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools K-12 curriculum supervisor, will be moving to a K-5 building with about 225 students.
Heusman is married to Kevin Heusman, a track foreman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. The couple have two boys, Klay and Kale. Klay is a freshman and Kale a sixth-grader at Sterling Public Schools.
Heusman taught for four years in a Class I school before it became part of the Ashland-Greenwood district and has 11 years with Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools.
In 2006, she returned to Ashland to assume the K-12 curriculum coordinator position after serving as an assessment coordinator with the Nebraska Department of Education from 2002-2006.
Heusman has a master’s degree in educational administration and said the Eagle principal’s job is the next step for her career.
She will be taking over for Frank Hoefling, who is retiring after 17 years as Eagle Elementary principal.
Heusman said it will be difficult to follow someone with that kind of tenure but is excited about bringing some new ideas to the position.
“Waverly has a reputation of being a fabulous school district,” Heusman said.
