The University of Nebraska won’t allow beer or alcohol sales in a proposed new arena in Lincoln’s Haymarket district.

Marc Boehm, Nebraska executive associate athletic director who oversees basketball, said the no-alcohol policy would include suites.

Alcohol isn’t served at any Nebraska athletic events. Beer is sold at Haymarket Park for Lincoln Saltdogs games, but not for Nebraska baseball games.

Nebraska’s basketball teams would be the main tenant in the proposed arena. Boehm said the city of Lincoln knows the university’s decision on alcohol sales.

Alcohol would be sold in the new arena for other events.

No schools within the Big 12 Conference allow alcohol sales at basketball games. Colorado allowed beer at the Coors Events Center until the 2006-07 season. CU spokesperson David Plati said the reason it was discontinued was “to be consistent with the policy in football and to support initiatives on campus.”

Alcohol is sold at Qwest Center Omaha during Creighton men’s basketball games.
