Democratic State Chairman Steve Achelpohl of Omaha has joined a flurry of superdelegates moving to Sen. Barack Obama’s side.

In announcing his endorsement, the Obama campaign released a statement from Achelpohl citing the senator’s ability to “put states like Nebraska in play” during the presidential election this fall.

“Sen. Obama continues to transcend ‘politics as usual’ and focus on the issues that really matter to American families and workers,” Achelpohl said.

“Our party can unite behind Sen. Obama and his positive campaign.”

Obama, he said, will “unite Americans from all walks of life behind his historic movement for change.”

Achelpohl waited 10 weeks after Nebraska’s Feb. 9 Democratic presidential caucuses to commit his superdelegate vote.

Obama sailed past Sen. Hillary Clinton in the caucuses, winning two of every three votes.

Achelpohl’s decision gives Obama five of Nebraska’s six superdelegate votes.

Only Audra Ostergard of Lincoln, the party’s 1st associate chairwoman, remains uncommitted.

Ostergard told a student audience at Doane College earlier this month that she plans to wait until the long string of Democratic primaries and caucuses is completed in June before committing her vote.

Achelpohl’s announcement followed on the heels of Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean’s call for superdelegates to leave the uncommitted ranks.

“I need them to say who they’re for, starting now,” Dean told CNN.

“We’ve got to know who our nominee is.”

Achelpohl’s decision locks up 21 of Nebraska’s 31 delegate votes at the Democratic national convention for Obama. He won 16 delegate slots at the caucuses compared with 8 for Clinton.

Superdelegates previously committed to Obama are Sen. Ben Nelson, National Committeeman Vince Powers of Lincoln, National Committeewoman Kathleen Fahey of Omaha and Frank LaMere of South Sioux City, who represents Native tribes on the party’s national committee.

One of Nebraska’s 31 slots is reserved for an unpledged delegate.

" Steve:
You made a great choice in Obama and honored the will of Nebraska Democrats. Thank you. Audra, it's time for you to do the same. "

" Hillary is probably going to go into her natural state - brutally mean junkyard dog mode - after Pennsylvania. Expect to see a news bombshell regarding Obama a day or two before that Penn vote, I'd bet the farm that she's going to leak something through a 3rd party, without sufficient time for his campaign to fully counteract it. " I'm a Republican, and I'm voting for Obama.
All I've ever seen from the other candidate's is alot of SMACK slinging...
Barak Obama has THE plan, and knows what needs to be done.
Hillary is a JOKE... and has no plan of her own.
BARAK OBAMA, you've got my vote come election time. "

" Nebraska Democrats are getting to be as delusional as Mr Bush. Mr Obama has very, very little National and International experience. What he has been able to accomplish is the #1 most Liberal voting record in the Senate. That will not fly with most of America and the Republican machine that I despise will chew him up and spit him out. Thanks for helping make McCain president. Vote responsibly next time. "

" Great news! Barack Obama is the only candidate who can bring our country together (if Hillary Clinton doesn't succeed in destroying him first). He's the only candidate who can lessen this endlessly divisive partisan bitterness and get Americans working together again. I've been more and more impressed as he's avoided being dragged into the gutter with the Clintons. He's stuck to his message, a message of hope and unity. Will he make mistakes? Heck, yes! Who doesn't? But he's got the smarts - and the honesty - to admit them and continue forward. I am so sick of a president who has never admitted making a single mistake while he's nearly destroyed our great country. And I'm sick of the partisan hacks in both parties who use the same old people to follow the same old politics-as-usual. Our country is desperately in need of Barack Obama. "

" Seems people are starting to see how Hillary actually is, she lies (oh, misspeaks, BOSNIA...ha), throws out the race card (Jeremiah White, Fahrakkan), her husband is really a liability (commenting on her 'senior moments'). I hope that Obama can really pull this off. He would be a great president for our country. "

" what exactly has obama said besides that he will bring change? he hasnt really mentioned any plans for fixing anything. just that hes going to change it. and i like the comments on how hilary throws out the race card, when obama can say that the typical white person is racist, just like his grandma. imagine if a white candidate had said that the exact same thing about a black person, the typical black male is a gangbanger. i imagine that would not go over so well. how about we vote for experience, instead of idealism and the most liberal record in the senate. vote mccain! "

" Although I dread four more years of "the same old thing" with McCain, it is far better than what either of the Democrat fools have to offer... I can't wait for 2012 to get here (if we survive that long...) "
