Authorities have released the identity of a man whose body was found Wednesday in a burned-out car in Richardson County.

A passerby discovered the body of 37-year-old Matthew Armstrong of Stella around 7:30 a.m. in his charred 1995 Ford Contour on a county road between Stella and Barada, about 11 miles north of Falls City, according to Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins.

Armstrong left his girlfriend’s house in Stella on Tuesday, headed to Hiawatha, Kan., with several friends, Collins said. He was last seen by one of his friends early Wednesday.

It appears Armstrong pulled over to the side of the road to rest and fell asleep, Collins said. Investigators believe the fire started around the front seat.

An autopsy was performed, and the cause of death has been determined to be carbon monoxide poisoning or burn injuries from the fire, Collins said. Foul play is not suspected.

" How sad, someone FINALLY responsible enough to pull over from being tired...

So sorry to his family and friends, especially his girlfriend. I lost my boyfriend in a vehicle accident 3 years ago, and will NEVER be the same person. "
