Mistrial declared for man accused of shooting off-duty officer
OMAHA — A Douglas County jury deadlocked on an assault charge against a man accused of trying to run down an off-duty police officer, prompting a mistrial.
Judge Thomas Otepka said Wednesday the jury couldn’t reach a decision on the charge of felony assault of an officer, but found Koko Sessou not guilty of assaulting a DJ at a west Omaha bar.
The jurors deliberated three days before Otepka called the mistrial.
Sessou was shot during the April 22 incident in front of the bar.
Officer David Brumagen has said he fired at Sessou’s car because he thought Sessou was driving at him. Brumagen was working as a security guard at the bar.
Sessou’s attorney, James Martin Davis, said his client wasn’t trying to hit Brumagen and that his injuries back that up; Sessou was shot in the back.
