Five drivers and 65 commercial vehicles were banned from the road during a series of surprise safety inspections in Lincoln Wednesday.

The Nebraska State Patrol, with help from Lincoln police, conducted 183 inspections on commercial vehicles that don’t normally travel outside the city or regularly pass through weigh stations, according to a press release.

The reason, Col. Bryan Tuma said, is that some people think they can get away with violations because their vehicles aren’t getting regularly inspected.

“While most truck owners and operators share our concern for safety, we know some think they can ignore safety standards as long as they avoid the weigh stations,” he said in a statement. “The (Metropolitan Aggressive and Preventive Selective) Team extends our reach into cities and towns across the state.”

During the Wednesday inspections, the MAPS Team discovered 486 violations and took 65 vehicles out of service for problems that could provide immediate safety risks, such as bad brakes or tires. Fines totalling $6,725 were issued.

Five drivers were banned from driving, three because they did not have valid Commercial Drivers Licenses, and two because of log book violations.

More surprise inspections are planned throughout the spring and summer in Nebraska.

" Good Job SP, take truckers out of service and fine them, but dont bother the red light runners and the many private vehicles that are on
the street. I know the law is the law but i never see a traffic spot check for private vehicles "

" Comments like the one from Robert80 make me laugh. For people like this, nothing is ever good enough. The article describes a positive thing that our law enforcment are conducting, yet all Robert80 can focus on is the negative. I, for one, am thankful for what's being done. "

" To Robert 80. Open your eyes!!! Any officer running radar sets is doing a vehicle inspection for registrations, insurance etc. Lots of officers are out running these checks but there are so many that all of them can't be caught right away "

" This is sorely needed. There are a bunch of medium and heavy trucks running around in and around town that are borderline safe at best. A large truck with so-so brakes can do a lot of damage and even cost lives if they wind up in a situation where their crummy brakes are the difference between a near miss and a crash. You've also got drivers that aren't even qualified to drive those trucks. Good job on all counts. "

" i think the inspections are a good idea. i worked for a guy that did not take good care of his trucks and cost me money in fines . "

" Lincoln Police do random safety checks on private vehicles as well. I have been stopped twice in the last 8 years and along with multiple other drivers had to check my blinkers, brake lights, headlights, seatbelts, license and insurance. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it hasn't happened. "
