State Patrol pulls over 65 vehicles for safety reasons
By The Lincoln Journal Star
Five drivers and 65 commercial vehicles were banned from the road during a series of surprise safety inspections in Lincoln Wednesday.
The Nebraska State Patrol, with help from Lincoln police, conducted 183 inspections on commercial vehicles that don’t normally travel outside the city or regularly pass through weigh stations, according to a press release.
The reason, Col. Bryan Tuma said, is that some people think they can get away with violations because their vehicles aren’t getting regularly inspected.
“While most truck owners and operators share our concern for safety, we know some think they can ignore safety standards as long as they avoid the weigh stations,” he said in a statement. “The (Metropolitan Aggressive and Preventive Selective) Team extends our reach into cities and towns across the state.”
During the Wednesday inspections, the MAPS Team discovered 486 violations and took 65 vehicles out of service for problems that could provide immediate safety risks, such as bad brakes or tires. Fines totalling $6,725 were issued.
Five drivers were banned from driving, three because they did not have valid Commercial Drivers Licenses, and two because of log book violations.
More surprise inspections are planned throughout the spring and summer in Nebraska.
