Cornerback Blue to miss spring ball
BY BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star
Figured to be a strong candidate for a starting cornerback spot this fall, Anthony Blue has suffered a knee injury that will keep the Husker out for at least the spring season.
The sophomore’s mother, Shawndra Blue, said Tuesday night that her son tore his ACL, but doctors were optimistic he’d have a chance to be back for the fall.
The injury occurred when he planted his foot awkwardly in a seven-on-seven passing drill during winter conditioning, she said.

“I’ll tell you one thing about him, he works his tail off,” said Joey McGuire, who coached Blue at Cedar Hill High School in Texas. “If he’s hurt, he’ll come back fast. He’ll do whatever he has to do to get back out there. He’s not going to accept sitting out for long.”
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Blue began to see significant action at the end of last season, starting over several veteran players in the home finale against Kansas State.
“A collision player who likes contact,” is how former Husker head coach Bill Callahan described Blue last year. “He has quick hands and good feet. He’s a really solid tackler, so there’s a lot of upside to Anthony’s game.”
Given that, Blue seems an important presence in a secondary that saw the departures of senior cornerbacks Zack Bowman, Cortney Grixby and Andre Jones.
Key cornerbacks who return for the Huskers include Armando Murillo, Anthony West, Prince Amukamara and Shawn Sullivan, who redshirted last season.
New recruits David Whitmore and Alfonzo Dennard could also challenge for playing time.
