Nearly $160 worth of Girl Scout Cookies disappeared from a 29-year-old’s car late Friday.

Police say the woman stopped to visit friends in the 1000 block of North 48th Street at 11 p.m. When she returned to her car about an hour later, 45 boxes of Peanut Butter Patties, Carmel deLites, Thin Mints, Shortbread cookies and Cinna-Spins that had been inside were gone, Office Katie Flood said. The car was left locked, but the cookie thief was able to get into the car through a partly opened window.

Police have no suspects, but may be wise to be on the lookout for a trail of cookie crumbs.

Witness describes robber’s getaway car

A witness says she saw the robber run out of Hy-Vee, 6919 O St., Saturday morning to a 1990s Chevy Cavalier or Pontiac Sunfire waiting on the south side of the store.

Officer Katie Flood said the woman was driving by on 70th Street when she saw him get in the passenger side of the car. She described the man as Caucasian, about 6-feet-tall, 180 pounds and in his late teens or early 20s.

Inside the store at about 9:30 a.m., a customer service clerk was working behind the desk when a man wearing a black coat and black sunglasses approached the counter and demanded $500, police say.

The clerk told the man she did not have that much money in the register; the man then said he had a gun, although no weapon was shown.

The clerk started to cry, and another employee noticed and went over to the desk to offer help.

The man quickly left the store without taking any money.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 475-3600.

" OK, seriously, theft isn't funny. But a real-life cookie monster?!?! That has to make you laugh a little bit...

Not that it is any of my business, but what was a 29-year-old woman doing with 45 boxes of G.S. Cookies? I suppose they were her daughter's or little sister's or something, but don't you think the story would mention this?

And they didn't get any Samoas, so luckily the real tragedy was averted. "

" Well, it seems as though the victims do make it pretty easy for the thieves lately, doesn't it? 20k stolen out of an unlocked van & now an open window in a locked car. Come on people, use some common sense! It's really hard to feel sorry for you when you "allow" this to happen. "

" when there are articles about people getting stuff stolen from unlocked vehicles and there are posts blasting the people for not locking the doors. Sure in reality lock your doors and deter the theft, but really what is so hard about - a its mine, not yours, dont touch policy! By all rights we should be able to leave $20000 sitting on the seat of a vehicle with the windows unrolled and expect someone to not touch it....but then again thats not reality! "

" LPD constantly pleads with people to not leave stuff in their car, and the papers and radio/TV news have these crime stories all the time, but no, some people don't listen! Get it through your head that it's foolish to make yourself a soft target for criminals. "

" Same person who stole the 20,000 and a passport? Never know. How about leaving a bunch of cookies loaded with X-LAX for the fools to steal? What we have in lincoln folks is a bunch of thiefs who only care about themselves. I have about had it with this town and it's unsafe streets. Maybe we should just take over like they do in texas and shoot them when you see them without breaking the law. "

My thoughts on the cookie situation is this. Those that would say the car should have been locked are just what I would consider to be the type that would walk the streets and be peering into cars and seize the opportunity to steal...that what thieves do! steal.
Kinda the grown-up version of finders-keepers....losers weepers.
Those that say people in this town should not have to lock their cars every time they get a few feet from them..my kind of people and I agree with them but yes we do have low lifes in this town that would steal a paint job off a car if they thought they could sell it and get a buck.......they could get more money working than stealing but stealing is their chosen occupation. " To Bill: I'm one of those people you speak of that say "should have locked your doors" not because i'm a theif, because i've lived in Lincoln all my life and know better that this isn't "Pleasantville". Why make it easy for these criminals to steal? If they are going to steal something out of my car--its going to take quite some time to get it done, and by then maybe i'll have a few more eye-witnesses. "

" I'm not blaming the girl scout cookie victim, but I'm wondering why she had the cookies in her car at 11pm and had a window partially down. This time of the year, most people don't have their windows down at night. Just curious. Hope someone saw something or knows something so they can catch the thief. "

Loulu wrote on February 27, 2008 9:36 am:
" Why should it matter if her window was down and it's winter? and why should it matter if she had GS Cookies in her car at night? I know that if i have to go and take something to a friend, and it's in my car to do so, but i happen to miss then that day, their stuff stays in my car, cause it's kind of senseless to take it inside, just to bring it back out as you're running out the door to work. and i also know that people sometimes roll the window down a bit to get some cooler air as the the heater blasts away, and sometimes, people smoke in their car, and then you know, some people just leave it there so they can have their things stolen out of their car! i know i do! "
