Saunders County drivers, consider yourselves warned. The Nebraska State Patrol and the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a high visibility selective near Valparaiso on Thursday.

The special enforcement effort will focus on crash-causing behaviors, such as speeding, driver inattention and driving too fast for conditions, said Deb Collins, State Patrol spokeswoman.

They will take place on Nebraska 79 and along county roads near Valparaiso.

A 23-year-old Lincoln woman, Andrea Lorenzana, died Friday in a crash three miles east of town when the vehicle she was riding in drifted left of center on County Road 25 and clipped an oncoming minivan.

Lorenzana, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Two others were injured.

On Feb. 9, a 22-year-old Saunders County man walked away from a roll-over crash on Nebraska 66, just east of County Road 31, after rolling his 2001 Ford Focus down an embankment.

Speeding and over-correcting were found to be factors in that crash. Collins said he was wearing his seat belt.

State Patrol Capt. Steve Ayres said the recent accidents are just two examples of the dangers of driving in rural areas.

“We hope by combining efforts with Saunders County we can draw attention to the need for motorists to slow down and use extra caution on county roads,” he said.

" Instead of blaming the cops for being too late or reactive...how about p-eople driving the way they are supposed to? That would take care of things, wouldn't it? "

" Maybe the cops should be checking into why three adults from lincoln are out on a saunders county gravel road at 7 in the morning. Sounds a little strange to me. "
