A 15-year-old boy fell through the ceiling at the downtown Wendy’s Sunday afternoon.

According to Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs, the boy was in the bathroom at the Wendy’s, 1336 Q St., where he climbed on top of a sink and into the ceiling through the tiles.

He fell out in the hallway near the bathroom soon after climbing into the ceiling, Beggs said.

The boy claimed he was locked in the bathroom, but an investigation produced no evidence the bathroom door had been locked. The boy was referred to the county attorney’s office, Beggs said.

" Okay...What? The headline is awesome: "Boy falls from Wendy's ceiling." You're immediately hooked just trying to figure out how the boy was on the ceiling in the first place. Then you read the story and you start laughing. Classic teenage antics on speed. "

" wow this kid is 15 and he thinks ceiling tile will hold him. Sounds to me like he deserved falling. Maybe he should pay attention in physics. "

" Wow, referred to the county attorney's office? What's he gonna be charged with? Stupidity in the first degree? "

" Why do I love living in Lincoln? Because instead of hearing about 5 murders that happened last night, I hear about a boy falling through a ceiling in Wendy's. No news is good news! :-) "

" We are all sitting here trying to figure out why the boy was in the ceiling the in the first place so let me give you a few things to consider. First of all, its very comon for burglars to hide in restroom ceilings until after close, so they can pop down after everyone is gone and get their loot. Also, people hide drugs in bathroom ceilings. The next time you go into a public restroom, look on top of the toilet tank lid for footprints and then look up to see if any of the ceiling tiles are moved or damaged. You will usually see this sort of a thing in a restroom that has a locking door, intended for one person at a time. Criminals find it a great place to do a transaction. "

if you think like a teenage boy you'll know why... wrote on February 19, 2008 12:28 pm:
" Duh! What do you think he was doing? He was probally going to go from the mens room to above the womens to 'peep' into the girls bathroom. "

Or maybe... wrote on February 19, 2008 1:37 pm:

" My first thought was maybe he was going to hide up there until close so he could rob the place but that would be a long wait if it was in the afternoon. Peep, Peep. "

" Thanks for this perspective.
As to the LPS comment about funding, I ask, Where are the parents? Shouldn't parents be accountable for a 15 year old? especially on a Sunday?
Common sense tells me to not climb into ceiling tiles, I learned from my parents, not school.
I will check bathroom tiles in future restaurants that I visit.
Heads UP! "

Guilt or Innocence? wrote on February 19, 2008 6:51 pm:
" So, since he was referred to the County Attorney and may be charged with a crime, why is the JournalStar not using its own policy Re: not publishing comments on the guilt or innocence of a suspent? "

" This is way too funny! This kid has so much to learn. Hopefully this was just one of the lessons taught and he learns something positive. I'm curious, was there anyone else in the restroom with him when he took of "upstairs?" Maybe an LPS emplyee?? Maybe his dad?? To funny! "

IWASTHERE wrote on February 20, 2008 1:24 am:
" I was actually eating there when this happened. It was hilarious, because all of a sudden there was a giant crash and dust was pouring down the hallway. The kid was just standing there in the middle of hanging insulation, ceiling tiles, and wires. There were even ceiling tiles hanging down over the menu. After we heard that he "got locked in the bathroom" and decided to crawl out through the ceiling, we were laughing too hard to finish our meal. What's funny is that the Wendy's employees were apologizing to him for the inconvenience of getting locked in... "

" LJS isn't publishing any comments about guilt or innocence, because the kid has not been charged with or accused of any crime. They can print what happened because these are the facts of the situation. LJS printed that the boy was referred to the county attorney's office, but never listed any kind of law-breaking. That's why the story does not violate policies. Pay attention to what you're reading! "

Why don't you wrote on February 20, 2008 10:37 am:
" A referral to the County Attourney is made to decide which charges to file. There will be charges!!! Just because they don't know exactly which one shouldn't change the policy "

Amy wrote on February 20, 2008 10:57 am:
" mitch_v: What in the heck does this have to do with LPS? I guess I wasn't paying attention in class when they taught us not to crawl through restaurant ceilings.

I think nobody is to blame here except the boy! You can't always blame somebody else... "

" A referral to the county attorney's office does NOT mean that charges will be filed. It means the investigating officer(s) reports are sent to the county attorney for his review to decide whether a) what was reported constitues a crime and b) whether or not the county attorney deems it necessary to press charges. At most, this kid's going to get off with a warning, so lighten up. Good grief people, it's a funny story! Let's just leave it at that! "
