The Legislature’s Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee advanced a resolution to the floor Wednesday that expresses support for an effort to put Ponca Chief Standing Bear’s likeness on the $1 Sacagawea coin.

State Sen. Bill Avery of Lincoln introduced the resolution (LR223) in January. Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood will now decide if and when to allow time for debate on the resolution.

The U.S. secretary of the treasury will be choosing Native leaders to be featured on the flip side of the coin each year starting in 2009.

" How embarassing that we have to leave it to the Feds to do what was a Nebraska responsibility. I wouldn't care if Governor Heineman made me King for Life. I wouldn't vote for him just because he appears to have something against Native Americans (casinos, quarters, no family members, White Clay, etc.). "

" just another waste of government money...thats all we
need...more dollars to devalue the dollar...maybe we
can bring back susan b anthony to be the treasury secretary...i know this is being overly simplistic but
you would think we would have better things to do in the legislature than worry about coins...how about health care
...social security...getting out of iraq and the like... "

" nebraska print its own currency or that he should be appointed "king for life"? are we supposed to put an indian casino on every corner and make sure to have at least one indian in our lineage to be considered "real" citizens? perhaps we're also supposed to ban alcohol in one town so people will drive that much further (drunk) to get it somewhere else. Yes, embarassing is a good word for "mr. peabody" "

" Not sure where the support for the previous comment comes from. I do support this movement however. He was a great leader. "
