McCOOK — A college volleyball coach who was fired Jan. 25 says he didn’t do anything illegal or have any improper contact with players, but he should have used better judgement.

Coach Gary Payne says in a letter to the McCook Daily Gazette newspaper that his firing by McCook Community College resulted from comments that other people posted on his personal MySpace Web page.

The Mid-Plains Community College administration has said only that Payne violated the school’s conduct rules for coaches and would not comment further, citing personnel policies.

" Why does any adult have a page on MySpace? I don't even get it. As an adult, if I want to converse with other adults I either call them or e-mail them. I'm sure MySpace can be fun, but if any one other than the "owner" can go into that person's profile and change it up, then the "owner" is putting himself at risk for just about anything. It's just like people who take "naughty" pictures and then are aghast when someone else gets ahold of them and shows them off. As an adult, don't put yourself in a position to be exploited and you won't be. "

" Some adults have MySpace pages to keep tabs on their teenage kids. Responsible parents do. Perhaps you're too quick to judge. "

" Several adults I know in their late 20's and early 30's have Myspace or Facebook pages to not only keep tabs on thier kids, but also to use as a networking tool. If you lock the profile, delete comments, and take an active role in the pages administration it's no different than having yourself listed in a public journal, who's who, or the phone book. I work in IT and have a Myspace and Facebook to keep up on what my clients are doing, and to test security issues on. Using technology doesn't make one irresponsible-that trait is already there.

" With these type of accusatios, the person charged is always peceived as being guilty, not innocent until proven guilty and this is so sad and has riuned so many peoples lives. Laws should be passed to make it a mandatory 5 year jail term for people who falsly accuse other people of this including mothers who use molestation charges for custody battles.
It is about time our law makers step up to the plate and put an end to this abuse of our system and stop ruining peoples lives. "
