When a 19-year-old woman arrived home to her apartment at 2300 bock of C Street early Monday, she was sure a burglar had broken in.

Her new puppy was on the deck, but the door had been closed when she left. Inside, the place had been ransacked, Christmas presents were everywhere, Police Chief Tom Casady said Wednesday.

She reported a break-in to police.

When the officer began to investigate at the scene, she found the suspect’s prints all over the counter (they turned out to be of the canine variety) and bite marks on the presents.

The suspect turned out to be Macy, the 9-month-old Labrador puppy she’d adopted from the Humane Society the day before.

He’d found a way to let himself out the back door.

" It might be wise to crate Macy. I found that it can be very beneficial and not "cruel" as I had once thought. "

" My sympathies to the "VICTIM" but what a great, laughable, story at Christmas, I hope the victim sees the humor in this and enjoys the story for years to come "

" Flippin hilarious! I would love to have been a "fly on the wall" while the CSI team were in action. "

" Even the police probably got a chuckle from this canine encounter. Doggone, an apartment is no place for a Lab pup. They need lots of room to romp and carry on - an acreage or farm is ideal. Sure hope you can return or exchange if the size is wrong! "

" That is just about the greatest story I've heard in a while. The 9 month old DOG outsmarted ya. LOL "

" As the owner of two labradors, I can guarantee this is just the first of many canine capers to come. Invest in obediance classes if this is your first dog....it will save you (and your dog) a lot of headaches. "

" this is most ridiculous story I have ever read. Why would you even make an article about this. This isn't news. "

" In the spirit of the usually comments on this site, "this is my tax dollars at work. The dog owner should be billed for the waste of funds." I don't really think this way but I though that I would say it before someone who really does think it says it first. Funny story! "

" Nina, the majority of "apartments" in this area of town are more like a duplex, they are generally HUGE old homes that have been split into apartments. My old "apartment" was 1200 square feet with a huge porch and large yard and my lab did just fine there. "

" I have an 18-month-old lab and he is the sweetest and most ornery dog. We had to keep Christmas presents on high shelves in closets with doors closed. I do recommend crate training though. It will work wonders and give your puppy a safe place that she can call her own. Make sure she gets lots of exercise too or she will continue to destroy things. Good luck and have fun with your puppy! Labs are wonderful and ours has provided us with much entertainment!!!! "

" Hey, c'mon folks. Innocent til proven guilty right? We probably shouldn't speculate until Ms. Macy has a fair trial. (I wonder if Macy's received any solicitation letters from any lawyers yet) :) "

" KJT what would you rather read - a cute refreshing story like this or something that is full of crime, hate, killings? I myself would rather see heartwarming stories anyday! "

" This is a precious story............I feel so bad for the 19 year old as I'm sure she was initially very frightened. Puppies and kids are so funny sometimes and do the most amazing things! It probably is a good idea to crate him for awhile while your gone; and just a suggestion, but make sure he gets lots of outside and excercise. "KJT" lighten up - the newspaper is for news and much more! Stories such as this believe it or not are great community sharing stories and our police deserve a little comic relief now and then! "

" I have a lab in downtown Chicago. Exercise, exercise, exercice. I give her an hour each day, usually more. Two days without exercise, she is chewing on walls, furniture, and I think even her own leg at times. Gotta keep them labs active, and they can live a very happy life without a yard. "

" The only thing that would act to this story is if we could see a picture of this adorable puppy. This is just a cute and fun article to read - a way to get away for at least a few minutes from the every day world. "

" Now we know the answer to the question: "Who let the dogs out, who, who, who, who". The dog let the dog out. Okay, I know that was stupid. "
