Injuries and bad luck late in a pair of matches proved enough to doom the 12th-ranked Huskers wrestlers on Thursday, as Nebraska lost a dual match 25-13 to No. 2 Minnesota on Thursday night in Minneapolis.

The Huskers took forfeit losses because of injuries to defending national champion Paul Donahoe (125 pounds) and Chris Oliver (157), giving the Gophers 12 points without any effort.

A major-decision win by third-ranked Craig Brester at 197 pounds and Jon May’s victory at 285 gave Nebraska a 7-0 lead to start the dual, but it was virtually all Minnesota the rest of the way.

At 133 pounds, 12th-ranked Kenny Jordan, the Big 12 wrestler of the month for November, was leading No. 5 Mack Reiter 4-3 late in the match, but gave up a takedown with two seconds to go, giving Minnesota an 8-7 lead.

Manny Rivera then earned a 15-3 major decision over NU redshirt freshman Curtis Salazar at 141 for a 12-7 Gophers advantage.

Defending national champion Dustin Schlatter struggled against NU’s sixth-ranked Jordan Burroughs at 149, earning a 2-1 decision because of a 1 minute, 10 second advantage in riding time. That win and the NU forfeit at 157 gave the Gophers a 22-7 advantage from which they couldn’t recover.

The final three matches were battles of ranked wrestlers, and the Huskers won the first two as No. 8 Stephen Dwyer outlasted No. 15 Scott Glasser 8-7 at 165 and third-rated Brandon Browne beat No. 7 Gabe Dretsch 7-5 at 174.

But Minnesota finished out the match with second-ranked Roger Kish’s 6-2 win against NU’s 11th-rated Vince Jones at 184.

The Huskers return to action tonight in Brookings, S.D., with a 7 p.m. dual against South Dakota State.
