PLATTSMOUTH — The buck that Plattsmouth paid for its Missouri bridge to Iowa is not quite the bargain it would seem.

The steel structure cost $700,000 to build in 1929 and has since provided its stockholder owners the tolls from its two lanes — currently $1.25 for cars and, depending on size, $2.25 or $2.75 for trucks.

The Nebraska State Historical Society listed the bridge as historically significant in 1993.

It says the bridge has seven spans:

— a 402-foot cantilevered through truss over the Missouri’s navigable channel, anchored by two 201-foot through spans;

— two 203-foot and two 104-foot deck trusses on the eastern flood plain in Mills County, Iowa.

The historical society says the bridge is a “noteworthy example of cantilevered truss construction.”

The structure needs lots of work, though — $3.2 million worth — and a federal rehabilitation project couldn’t go forward for a private owner.

So the Plattsmouth Bridge Co. and the city of Plattsmouth on Friday agreed to the sale price: $1.

The bridge will be closed for work from May into November next year. It will remain a toll bridge after the repairs.

A five-member city commission will be responsible for bridge oversight, including liability, maintenance and budgeting.

“We are going to have a good, viable and safe bridge that hopefully should serve us for the next 20 to 30 years,” Plattsmouth Mayor Paul Lambert said Monday.

In 2006, nearly 1,200 vehicles a day crossed the span, which serves U.S. Highway 34 travelers.

“I’m happy and elated that (the repairs) are happening, for Plattsmouth and for Cass County,” said Greg Schneider, a representative of the Plattsmouth Bridge Co.

" Maybe my math is wrong but using the figures for 2006 and just for cars @ $1.25 the tolls amounted to $547,500. The owner(s) sell for one dollar. Why wouldn't they keep the bridge and make the repairs? Just wondering. "

" If my federal funds are going to repair this bridge why is it going to stay a toll bridge when its done. It's a state hwy. The city of Plattsmouth should just enjoy the revenue that is earns off of hwy 34 travel. "

" Each time we go over that bridge, I hope it's a short trip back through time, and not down to the river. Historically impressive, but scary. "

" As a motorcyclist,I use this bridge every time I go into Iowa.I'll gladly pay the toll just to stay out of Omaha traffic on the bike. I'm glad to see some dollars going into it's maintenance. I guess I'm going to have to take the north route through Blair next summer. "

" Well Kathy if you bothered to read the article it said the bridge would not be eligible for federal funds if it was held by a private owner. So they sould it for a dollar "

" amazing that an old bridge can outlast the newer ones in Minnesota. "

" Well, this looks like a scam if I ever saw one. So, the bridge wasn't eligible for federal funding due to private ownership. So the company that runs it has sold it to a government organization, so it can use federal funding to fix it. After my tax dollars are used to fix it, they intend on still charging a toll on it, even though federal monies are going to be used to fix it... Hmmmmm... I wonder, who is going to "manage" this toll bridge, and what is their cut going to be to provide these services. I bet there are a couple of shadow companies in the loop, but if the chain of evidence goes back to the original company, I call shenanigans. Also, if it remains a toll bridge, what will the funds for that be used for? Hey JS, why don't you ask some of these questions some time. "

" I'm sure Kathy read the article. I think the point she was trying to make is this bridge was a cash cow for the stakeholders. Heck, if you take the mid range price times average number of daily travelers, even you, DUH, could figure out this bridge makes 3.5 million in something like 3 years. Why didn't these people fix it themselves and then keep making tons of money off it?? "
