The Husker women knew they’d defeat Robert Morris if they could dominate the paint and shut down high-scoring Sade Logan.

They succeeded in both and wore down the Colonials during the second half of a 73-58 win Sunday at the Devaney Sports Center.

Coming into the game, Logan had a 26.8-point-per-game scoring average and recently had 34 points against Missouri.

Nebraska’s Kala Kuhlmann and Tay Hester were assigned to defend the high-scoring guard and pestered her all game.

Logan scored just nine points in the first 33 minutes before added 10 late in the game.

NU coach Connie Yori said she was pleased with the way Kuhlmann and Hester made Logan shoot 8-for-23 from the field.

“Both of them did a great job on her,” Yori said. “We only really gave her one open look in the first 35 minutes.”

Even though Logan wasn’t a factor in the first half, the Huskers couldn’t get much going offensively and led just 33-30.

The Huskers’ post play simply was too strong in the second half and led to a 14-0 run that gave the Huskers a commanding 58-40 lead with nine minutes left.

Kelsey Griffin and Cory Montgomery sparked the run. Griffin twice found Montgomery in the post after getting double-teamed.

Griffin followed the assists with two steals that she turned into baskets in a 30-second span.

Griffin, who scored seven points in the run, said the Huskers’ depth sparked the spurt.

“We played 10-11 girls,” Griffin said. “For us to have that capability against them maybe rotating only six or seven. I mean, at the pace we play at, we were just able to really wear them down.”

Griffin, who still is bothered by a rib injury she suffered in an exhibition against UNO, only played 17 minutes. But she still scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had four assists and four steals.

Montgomery added 16 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double, and senior forward Danielle Page scored 14 points.

The three forwards scored 45 of the Huskers’ 73 points and combined for 29 rebounds.

After managing only eight offensive rebounds against Creighton on Friday, Nebraska had 18 against the Colonials.

Montgomery said the way the Huskers dominated the paint and hit the offensive boards blew the game open in the second half.

“We just broke down their defense because we knew they were going to double us strong because we were going at them in the post,” Montgomery said.
