Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs and one of its physicians are denying claims by a woman who said she had an emergency hysterectomy because of a botched abortion.

Lincoln attorney James Snowden, in a formal answer on behalf of Planned Parenthood and Dr. Meryl Severson, said the woman was well aware of the risks associated with the procedure before it was performed on her at the Lincoln clinic this summer.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, said she had the hysterectomy at a Lincoln hospital because her uterus was perforated during the abortion, performed at the clinic Aug. 17.

According to the lawsuit, filed in August by Lincoln attorney Jefferson Downing, the woman lost four liters of blood from the procedure, which, she said, caused her excruciating pain.

Snowden said in the answer that the woman, who had an earlier elective abortion, was provided information at the time about the risks and complications associated with the procedure.

The attorney also said she was “unusually anxious and had difficulty lying still” despite being given pain medication and a local anesthetic. Snowden said staff advised the woman of the importance of staying still.

In her lawsuit, the woman said staff refused to stop the procedure when she told them she was in pain. Snowden said in the answer that “it would have been medically inappropriate to prematurely terminate” the abortion, given the circumstances.

He acknowledged the woman sustained a perforated uterus, but he said the injury is a rare but recognized complication of abortions “despite great care by the physician performing the procedure.”

" Yes, this sort of thing can happen, but it's very rare, and usually clears up within a few hours. The uterus is actually a very small organ, and some minor irritation is usually not a concern. More than likely, this whole thing was trumped up by some crooked lawyer trying to make a quick buck. "

" An eye for an eye. She was taking the life of the baby...therefore, she shouldn't be allowed to ever have children. It was an act of God. What does she need a uterus for anyway? To terminate the lives of future children? "

" I'm sorry but a perforated uterus does not just clear up. It wasn't irritated, it was perforated (that means it had a hole in it). You pro-choicers love to scream about all the botched abortions there would be if abortion was made illegal. Well guess what, they are dangerous and can be botched legal or otherwise. I'm sorry this lady had to have a hysterectomy, but she made the poor choice to have an abortion (her 2nd) in the first place. "

" Planned Parenthood has as much as admitted guilt! They said that perforation is a known risk, but they failed to be prepared for it and to treat it before it became life-threatening. Not to mention they're admitting that they provided inadequate pain relief. If I was them, I'd fire that lawyer. Oh, and the way he snarkily said that this was the woman's second abortion -- trying to paint her as some skanky tramp who deserved this? Only two kinds of defendants try to make the victims looks like tramps -- rapists and abortionists. "
