A smoke detector sent five family members outdoors to escape a home fire on the 2200 block of  Dudley Street early Sunday.

The father ran back into the house to save another child, Deputy Lincoln Fire Chief Pat Borer said.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at about 12:30 a.m., Borer said. Damage to the house and its contents is estimated at $160,000.

The cause is still under investigation, Borer said, but one possibility is that an electrical heater was placed too close to clothes.
