Real estate broker seeks ed board seat
By the Lincoln Journal Star
Richard Meginnis, a commercial real estate broker, announced Friday his plans to seek the District 2 Lincoln Board of Education seat.
The 49-year-old lifelong Lincoln resident and registered Republican will face Doug Evans, also a Republican, in the May 1 general election.
Evans is one of three board members up for re-election.
Ed Zimmer, who represents District 4, and Lillie Larsen, who represents District 6, have filed for re-election. Zimmer and Larsen are running uncontested.
The Board of Education is a four-year, nonpartisan position.
Meginnis attended Sheridan Elementary, Irving Junior High and Southeast High School. He is a senior vice president with NAI FMA Realty.
He and his wife, Lisa, have three sons who attend Lincoln public schools: Sam, 17, a junior; Peter, 15, a freshman; and Matt, 11, a fifth-grader.
Meginnis has been involved in LPS activities over the years, including: the Student Housing Task Force; Construction Review Committee; Lincoln East Booster Board; LPS School Bond Committee; and parent-teacher organizations.
Meginnis said he believes the top priority for LPS should be student achievement. To succeed in that area, he said, the board needs to accomplish the following:
n Provide adequately sized classrooms and learning spaces for all students and educators.
n Increase communication with educators, stakeholders, parents and citizens.
n Empower and remove barriers for educators so they can succeed.
Meginnis is a member of the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, Realtors Association of Lincoln, Executive Club and Lincoln Independent Business Association. He is a Leadership Lincoln fellow and a past president of the Better Business Bureau.
