24-year-old Cook woman dies in rollover crash
A 24-year-old Cook woman died early Saturday in a rollover crash on the southwest edge of town.
Elizabeth Warland died at the scene of the crash shortly before 4 a.m. on Cook Spur, Nebraska 49A, at the Triangle Park portion of Windmill Park, according to a release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Jason Fisher said the car, a 2006 Mazda 3, rolled as it headed eastbound into Cook. The car rolled at least twice, he said, and came to rest on its roof off the right side of the road.
Warland’s body was found outside the vehicle, Fisher said; she had not been wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. Warland was a certified nurse’s aide at the Belle Terrace in Tecumseh, and was a bartender at the Sidelines Bar in Cook.
Rescue workers took the driver, Ryan Cannon, 24, and a second passenger, Michael Nelson, 28, to hospitals in Syracuse and Tecumseh. Nelson later was transferred to BryanLGH West Medical Center in Lincoln. Fisher said both of them were in stable condition Monday afternoon.
The matter is being investigated jointly by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol.
According to the release, possible criminal charges are pending against Cannon, the driver. Charges will be determined at the conclusion of the investigation.
Alcohol is being investigated as a factor in the fatal accident, Fisher said.
Deputy Johnson County Attorney Rick Smith said an accident reconstructionist was called in to help determine the cause of the crash.
