Fire destroys Nehawka home
No one was injured, but a two-story home was destroyed by fire Friday morning in Nehawka.
Firefighters were called at 10:30 a.m. to 525 North St., said Brad Lahm, chief deputy for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
The wood-frame home was occupied by Erica Foyt and her three children, Lahm said. Foyt’s teenage daughter was at a neighbor’s house when she saw the smoke and called 911.
It was unclear whether the other family members were home when the fire broke out.
Fire departments from Nehawka, Union, Weeping Water, Murray, Plattsmouth and Nebraska City helped extinguish the blaze, Lahm said.
The fire appeared to have started in the attic and had engulfed the house by the time the Weeping Water fire unit arrived after 11:15 a.m. Friday, said Weeping Water Fire Chief Earnest West.
West said some cars parked near the home were damaged, and the siding melted on a nearby house.
“It was a very hot fire,” he said.
Nehawka, a town of about 230 residents, is in Cass County about 35 miles east of Lincoln.
The state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
