Pledging to turn the spotlight on the Iraq war and global warming, Steve Larrick of Lincoln said Monday he’ll enter the 2008 Senate race as a Green Party candidate.

Larrick plans to announce his candidacy on Sunday, standing on the north steps of the State Capitol, where a statue of William Jennings Bryan once resided.

“I believe Nebraskans want to end the war in Iraq and redirect our national resources toward building a just and sustainable economy that combats global warming and creates good jobs for all Americans,” Larrick said.

Larrick, an elected member of the Lower Platte South Natural Resource District board, was a Green Party candidate for the 1st District House seat in 2004 and garnered 7,345 votes.

“Voters are increasingly upset with where the two major parties are taking this country,” Larrick said.

“Money is corrupting our politics. And voters, especially the young, are ready for a new direction in 2008.”

Larrick, a community development professional, said he chose the site where Bryan’s statue once stood because the famous Nebraskan was “a champion for peace.”

The statue was removed from the Capitol steps by a vote of the Nebraska Legislature in the midst of the Vietnam War, Larrick said. It had stood there for 20 years before it was abruptly moved in 1967, he said.

“I am running because I believe Nebraskans of conscience will vote to end this war in Iraq,” Larrick said.  And if he’s elected, he said, he’ll vote to bring U.S. troops home.

Larrick said he agrees with Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel’s call for direct talks with the government of Iran to seek peaceful resolution of disputes with that nation.

“There is no reason to be preparing for war with Iran or for World War III, as President Bush has recently stated,” he said.

Larrick said he supports public investment for jobs in energy conservation, public transportation, and renewable wind, solar and biomass energy systems.

Larrick, 55, has worked for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. He serves as president of the Lincoln chapter of the United Nations Association.

" Larrick got 7,345 votes in 2004, which was a whopping 3% of the vote. And he got that huge number in the most liberal of Nebraska's three House districts. In other words, this isn't newsworthy. "

" This is idiotic. He'll just be taking votes (though not very many) from the Democratic candidate, making it even more likely that a far-right Republican will win. Didn't the Greens learn anything from Nader's third-party presidential campaign in 2000? Thanks to him, we have the worst president in history and one disaster after another for the past seven years. The two-party system has worked well for America, and any third-party effort will just help hand an election to your most bitter foes. Or is this run just ego? "

" Don't even announce Steve. You don't have a prayer of being elected. "

" Wow...another socialist announces he's against the war on terror, president bush, blah blah blah blah. Hey Steve...why dont you just move to france or cuba. "

" He knows he won't win, but he will get a few thousand votes. I'll donate some cash to his campaign, since all the votes he'll attract (few though they may be) would otherwise go to a Democratic candidate. This will give Johanns an even bigger landslide win. Go Larrick! "

" Thanks for running, Steve. You offer a choice that the two parties simply will not give us. The Democrats have sold out to the corporate interests as much as the Republicans have, so you are not taking votes away from a worthwhile party. Clinton will not get us out of Iraq any faster than the Republicans because she is funded by the same interests. Despite the idiotic knee-jerk reactions from a couple of people on this site, I am sure many Nebraskans will welcome the refreshing views that you bring into the campaign. Go for it! It is time for change. "

" Seriously, Hank has a good point. Voters on the far left would have to hold their nose and vote for a Democrat that won't win, or just stay home. Johanns is probably going to beat whichever Democrat that is like a rented mule. That being the case, far left voters can vote Green to send a message to the Democratic party, that they can't rely on those voters to just grab their ankles and ask if "Please sir may I have another!". Ignore their issues (war, environment, social justice, etc), and they'll no longer pull the donkey lever. "

" I'd vote for this guy before I will vote for Bruning, Flynn or Johanns. "

" Thanks Again Steve for being the only candidate who has the interest of true americans in mind. That is to say peace, justice and love of the planet. I'm tired of these people and candidates that talk a big talk but are never involved in any civic action or anything but their unrelenting greed. Get out of the way and let some light thru! Steve, You Rock!!!!! "
