The man who police believe fired the fatal shot in a drive-by on North 27th Street in 2006 has been arrested and charged on suspicion of murder.

Police picked up Anthony D. Riley, 24, shortly before noon Tuesday  near his house at 3235 Vine St., Officer Kacky Finnell said.

In court records filed a day earlier, prosecutors charged Riley with second-degree murder for the Aug. 6 shooting death of Doyle Bryant III.  The charge carries a sentence of 20 years to life.

He also faces three counts of attempted second-degree murder for the other men in the car and six other felonies.

Riley was in court Wednesday afternoon for the first time on the 10-count complaint.

Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Amy Jacobsen asked Judge Jean Lovell to set his percentage bond at $2 million.

“Obviously, this is a serious charge. He shot at an occupied vehicle, killed one and wounded two others,” Jacobsen alleged.

Lovell followed the request and set Riley’s next court date for Nov. 20. Riley shook his head as he was escorted back to jail.

On the night of Aug. 5, Bryant,  his brother, Daryl, and two friends rented a car in Omaha and headed to a downtown Lincoln club to see a popular Omaha deejay’s show to celebrate Doyle Bryant completing barber school.

At 1:45 a.m. Aug. 6, they were headed home, northbound on 27th Street north of Superior Street, when a gold car pulled alongside them and someone, allegedly Riley, shot into their car.

Police said Doyle Bryant, 28, of Omaha, was shot in the chest. Daryl Bryant and friend Lynell Green both were shot in the leg.  A fourth man in the car, Laron Tolbert, wasn’t hit.

Green, who was driving, crashed into a light pole, then turned the car around in search of help. Near 27th and Y, they came upon a police officer, who contacted medical help. They then were taken to BryanLGH West, where Doyle Bryant died.

Police believe the shooting suspects chased the wrong car after a fight outside Opulence Ultra Club, 1033 O St.

Riley’s arrest is the third in connection with the shooting.

In June, O’Dari Wiley was arrested in Mississippi, where his mother lives. He is alleged to have been at the wheel of the shooter’s car. Wiley waived extradition back to Nebraska and is awaiting trial. He since has been convicted of federal drug charges.

In October 2006, police arrested 23-year-old Terrell L. Jones of Lincoln, who is fighting charges that he was an accessory to the crime.

Police believe the men belong to a Lincoln gang called the Vice Lords.

According to the affidavit for Riley’s arrest, a Lincoln police officer sent to a party in Havelock within two hours of the shooting saw a gold Mercury Grand Marquis that matched the description of the car involved in the shooting. Intransit tags listed Riley’s name as the owner.

In court records, Police Investigator Gary Sims said the officer saw Wiley and Riley, who allegedly gave another man’s name, near the car.

In a later interview with police, Riley allegedly said he’d gone to the party to get his car, but denied having been in it that night.

Wiley, Riley and two other men had been in fights at the club that night, according to court records. When they left, they saw a red car of people with whom they thought they’d been fighting.

Police say it was another car.
