You may have seen the e-mail.

The one with pictures of slap bracelets, Alf the alien, friendship bracelets and the computer game “The Oregon Trail.”

The one that starts out, “You Know You Grew Up In the ’80s if:

Story Photo
Remember the sorta-creepy mechanical band from Showbiz Pizza? Then you must've grown up around here in the '80s. (Journal Star file photo)

- You’ve ever ended a sentence with the word “psych!”

- You can sing the rap to the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and do the Carlton.

And features such gems as:

- You tight-rolled your jeans.

- You know all the words to Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name.”

- You just sang those words to yourself.

But what about all the things you would only remember if you grew up here in the 1980s?

Here’s a list we made up. By all means, add your own thoughts in the comments area below.

You were growing up in the Lincoln area in the 1980s if:

- You remember bawling when the Huskers lost the Orange Bowl.

- You can remember when Gap and Banana Republic were exotic brands from far-away places.

- You loved Big Ben the bear at the Folsom Children’s Zoo.

- You remember when our governor, Bob Kerrey, was dating a movie star!

- You recall “awesome” family outings to Peony Park in Omaha.

- You saw movies at The Cooper at 54th and O streets.

- You had your birthday party at Showbiz Pizza.

- The East Park Plaza food court was The Place to see and be seen.

- You faced off against the mighty alligator at Cool Crest mini golf.

- You can remember how long it used to take to drive anywhere, because the interstate speed limit was 55 mph.

- You can remember the photo booth at Kresge’s at Gateway Mall (and when Gateway was an outdoor mall, like SouthPointe).

- You scrambled to the top of the blue elephant slide in the indoor playground at Richman Gordman.

- You watched “Romper Room,” and if you weren’t on the show at least once, you were really, really jealous of friends who were.

- You can remember scary Halloween events set up inside The Centrum and lines around the block to get inside.

- You were young enough to get a little scared by all the creepy Halloween stuff at Thingsville.

That building then became the Glass Onion when Dirt Cheap moved across the ally. There was Macguffy's with Metro the manager on the corner. On P St., you had that old antique/junk store that had neat things in the windows but was never open, You had the Green Frog, which was always good for a fight a night and visit from LPD's finest. And the buffalo meat place on the corner. On 10th there was a taxidermy store, Reliable Sewing machine store, where Pickles started in the basement. And O G Kelly's bar where OG and Jeck continued the tradition and food(chili and beef, brick and onion sandwiches) of Lebsack's Tavern. I was working there and remember Open Stage on Monday nights and Comedy night once a month, the great bands ie Charlie Burton. Plus it was the closest bar to Memorial Stadium, so you could run over at half time and resupply and get back in time for the second half. That was a great block. "

Pin Ball machines at the Rec center on 20th and Van Dorn where you had to sign up and take turns by switching every 20 minutes. Punk Rock, Thriller, the moon walk, Going skating at 1 of 3 of the skating rinks (Skate Land was the newest on Cornhusker Hwy.) or going to one of 3 drive through theaters on Saturday nights. What Happened to the safe easy life of the 80's any way? Why did we let them escape? I think we should bring it all back so our kids and grandkids can enjoy it all again! What do you think? "

There was also a drive-in theater out on west "O" until it was hit by a tornado. (I think that is what happened to it anyway). We use to go there for my b-day during the summer. We also went to the one on 84th. We would sit down and watch the movie from the old metal playground equipment with our "boom box" so we could here the movie. Actually walking to elementary school. Scratch and sniff stickers from Stephenson school supplies. That asian store at east park that had no qualms about selling ninja throwing stars to unaccompanied 9 year olds. The cafeteria at Miller & Paine. The Computer Swap Shop. PAMIDA. When the rock island and mo pac trains actually came through town and there were railroad tracks where the bike trails are now. Wondering why your parents were so worried about you during the John Joubert days. When they imploded the old Cornhusker Hotel. Listening to Otis Twelve and Diver Dan Doomie on Z92. THE KFRX RAP! That huge mural on the side of DISCO TREK (wasn't it called STOOGES after? Then the Fizz?). Gateway Bank, Lincoln Bank East (my very first savings account), Lincoln Bank South. BANK IN THE BOX. Ron Kurtenbach's public access call in show. Halloween Hulabaloo at the zoo. YMCA youth soccer at woods park with those clever reversible red/blue jerseys. The embassy theater (well, I never went in there as a kid but one couldn't help but wonder why we never went to >that< movie theater...) When they shot Terms of Endearment at Leon's food mart. When they would throw oranges onto the field at Husker games. "Mad Mike" and his drum at the games. The F-4 Phantoms at the air base. Well there's a lot more, but that's enough rant for one night... Does anyone else remember that store there next to the vaccuum store...I think they sold meat and cheese. It always smelled weird to me, but I always wanted to go in there. B Dalton was a candy store not a book store. Was it Russell Stovers? My cousins worked at Flaky Jakes (where Olive Garden is now). Wasn't there a Treasure City on 48 & Leighton where Hy-Vee is now? I think that is where I got my first hula hoop! I remember mall bangs in the late 80's and boy do I have some embarssing pictures of that. K-mart on 48th & Vine street. The original Runza that was some where out by Pioneers park. The little parking lot carnivals that would pop up everywhere. There was a drug store on the corner of 48h & St. Paul in Uni Place-- there was soda fountian in there and we would sometimes have our Girl Scout meetings there. "

I think we did that in 4th or 5th grade at Huntington. Sledding on Tanker Hill in Air Park-- that might have been early 90's! "

" With as many times as I find myself hating Lincoln these days, I keep remembering all of these memories and more. Thanks to everyone for these - here's some of mine: Lincoln East Jr-Sr High (six years, buddy!), Sluggos, then WC Franks East at East Park. Asian Treasures was the store in East Park that sold throwing stars - and "Nam" (the owner?) wouldn't sell them to anyone she didn't trust. Dirt Cheap - God rest the soul of Terry Moore, who taught me all about rock and roll. Q102- the ORIGINAL Rock n' roll legend. Sunday night requests on KFRX, "Live from Holmes Lake Hilltop Plaza!" Little Bo's and Drumstick, The Centrum, the Atrium. Cosmic Comics at East Park! Little Chiefs and Babe Ruth baseball. Arturos - DAMN, I could SO go for a tacha right now. In either the 70th & Pioneers or downtown locations. And yes, it WAS Stooges downtown - where my sister met her now husband, and where Old Chicago is now. Classic Food Mart in Clocktower, and DQ where the Amigos is (also at Clocktower, 70th &A) Jack & Jill at Meadowlane, and Mr. Pizza too. When your folks went to the Neb. State Fair, and actually FOUND something you hadn't ever seen - before infomercials - and sometimes bought it and brought it home. LOGO - the computer program with the green triangle as a a "turtle", being taught by LPS teacher Jerry Shedlosky (who also invented it, if I remember right). Once again, Q102, KFMQ, and the cool promos they had before the movies at ANY Douglas theatre. The Cooper theatre on O Street. Waldo burgers. 92.9 The Eagle? Aren't they the ones with the ambulance for a station vehicle, and that Barker guy dressed up as Batman? Cruising O Street. The Lighthouse. Hinky Dinky. The drive-ins. Winters that really WERE winter. So many more... thanks to all of you for reminding me why I've stayed as long as I have. "

" The "old" Gateway Mall with no where near the current enclosure. I used to buy cellophane "stacks" of baseball cards at J.J. Kresge (probably pre 1980s). Miller and Paine (now Dillard's) had this wonderful ice cream pie with chocolate topping. That was always a treat. There was also a restaurant named Flakey Jakes (where Olive Garden now stands). It had great burgers and bronwies, and always had great coupons in the newspaper that we would clip and use! While in college I worked part-time right across the street from there at Ben Simon's! "

We would also go across the street to Chick Bartlett's Hobby Shop to check out the HO scale war tanks and trucks. One time my brother and I went downtown and saw the movie "The Conqueror Worm" with Vincent Price at the Varsity. We thought it was about a big worm. It was actually about witch trials and was very "inappropriate" for us to see at our age. Also recall my brother and I cruising "O" street, buying a Valentino's Pizza and driving around listening to Queen, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, etc.. lol. "
