SCOTTSBLUFF — The owner of Valley Airways says no one has taken a flight from Scottsbluff to Lincoln for more than two months.

The $600 round trip ticket combined with uncertainty about whether the flights will be canceled have hurt the venture.

Dick Bosn says high fuel prices means it costs him $1,500 to fuel the aircraft. He requires reservations from three passengers on the six-seat plane before he’ll fly.

Overall boardings at the Western Nebraska Regional Airport are up, and the airport authority hopes to reach the 10,000 passenger threshold needed to qualify for federal airport improvement funds.

" Why spend $600 when you can drive it in six hours for $50? "

" That seems like a pretty specific market and pretty expenseive, unless you stop for gas west of Grand Island. Oh wait they stopped that practice. Cheaper and probably easier to drive unfortuantely. "

" Where are you driving from that you can make Scottsbluff to Lincoln in 6 hours for $50. Better yet, what are you driving that you can do it round trip for $50 in gas. I'd like the gas mileage you claim.. Common sense....the 6th sense that a lot of people don't have.. "

" Exactly! I know it's more "convenient" but for Pete's sake, that's expensive just to save 6 hours of driving! I'd just rather get up early and hit the road and save myself the money. "

Who's lost their common sense? wrote on October 18, 2007 10:20 am:
" What is Lincoln to Scottsbluff? About 400 miles? Just for arguments sake, let's say it is 450 miles. 450 divided by 16 (a typical car's fuel tank) is 28.125 miles per gallon. Not exactly a stretch is it? Now 16 gallons times $3.00 per gallon of gas is $48, heck that even leaves room for a snack. Now, let's say you can average 65 mph, a stretch, but not unheard of, is between 6 and 7 hours. What exactly is your "6th sense"? P.S. I dont think CS ever said anything about round trip... "

" Round trip from Scottsbluff to Lincoln: $600 Cost to drive said trip: $100 Getting to look down on those fools driving while you join the Mile High club: PRICELESS "

" I messed up the roundtrip part. OK, I'd rather drive it for $100 (one tank each way -- I don't drive a Hummer) than fly it for $600. The $500 extra isn't worth the time saved. And I actually drive, I don't crawl down the highway. 400 miles in 6 hours is less than 70 mph -- lower than the speed limit. "

Do the math wrote on October 18, 2007 1:04 pm:
" Mapquest puts the trip, airport to airport at 417 miles and a 5 hour, 59 minute drive. So you're pretty close. Assuming an average MPG of 20, will take about 21 gallons to make the trip one way. With gas at around $3/gal, it will cost $63 to make the trip one way. So, $126 in gas, and 12 hours of time to make it a round trip. At $5.75/hour, that trip is worth a total of $195. At $20/hour, that trip is worth a total of $366. Lets not forget the wear and tear on your vehicle, etc. What's my point, I don't know, I just like math. Hope I did it right. :) "

" Who would want to go to lincoln from scottsbluff? Go to denver or BOULDER or loveland. Enjoy the scenery and drive to the mountains. If I lived in the western part of the state, lincoln and omaha would be the last places I would want to visit. "
