Lincoln YWCA executive director Susan Scott said Monday she will resign her position shortly after this year’s 27th Annual Tribute to Women luncheon, Oct. 26.

Scott said she plans to spend time training for the next Lincoln Marathon and planning her future, which could include running for the state Legislature in District 29, a southeast Lincoln seat held by Sen. Tony Fulton. The incumbent has announced he will seek re-election.

Scott also plans to return to business consulting, substitute teaching and volunteering.

Beatty Brasch of the Center for People in Need, who serves on the YWCA board of directors, said Scott did an excellent job of furthering the organization’s mission of eliminating racism.

She led programs that helped people develop a sensitivity and awareness of racism in the community, Brasch said.

“She brought groups together toward that aim,” she said. “She was quite involved in the community.”

Scott has served as president of the Directors of United Way Agencies and as co-president of Citizens Against Racism and Prejudice (CARD). She organized and served as chairperson of three No Place for Hate rallies.

Under Scott, who served the agency for nearly seven years, its  Child Development Center was awarded accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which works to raise the quality of programs for all children from birth through age 8.

The agency also held its first annual Rosa Parks essay contest for fifth-graders involving more than 140 children in 2007. She implemented a special swimming program for Middle Eastern women and their daughters which met their religious needs and she collaborated  with Friendship Home to give women who have been subject to abuse a night for themselves while knowing their children would be safe.

In 2001, Scott received the Alice Paul award from the Lincoln Lancaster Commission on Women. In 2005 the NAACP recognized her for community involvement. Last year, the Association of Non Profits Executives named her executive of the year, and this year she was chosen woman of the year by the Nebraska Business and Professional Women.

Scott said she will continue to serve on the YWCA Lincoln’s low-income housing board and plans to assist in the leadership transition.

Brasch said the YWCA board is in the process of searching for a new director to replace Scott.

" Susan Scott would make an excellent legislative leader in district 29. Her track record of accomplishments at the YWCA is nearly legendary...she is being shown on Channel 5 this week describing the YWCA history. Scott has been and will be a tireless, informed and dedicated professional that has walked the walk and talked the talk. Best of luck in your next undertakings and marathon(s) Susan! "

" Susan Scott would only be a mouthpiece for gay rights in the legislature. The YWCA is in financial trouble and this is the person we want to help run our state? I think not. "

" I have a great deal of respect of Susan's accomplishments at the YWCA. I hope she does run for the District 29 seat. That area would be well-served by her. Good luck Susan! "

" Believe it or not there are gays that live in Lincoln and are constituents. Amazingly enough, some politicians can actually represent a widely diverse group of people within their area and still be an effective legislator. "

" Yes, Susan, we dearly need you as our senator from the 29th District. "

" Finally - a representative for the entire district! She is going to give Fulton a run for his money. "

" She is going to give him a run for his money. And then, if she gets elected, she will give the taxpayers a run for theirs. Check out the YW's financial status currently. They are about to go under because of her. A good person does not automatically make a good money manager. Not what we need in the legislature. "

" Reason why people are worried that she is going to be supposedly bad is because she is a smart, capable and intelligent woman. "

" Hold the fort here. Susan has done a sustainable and remarkable job at the YWCA with only pennies. She is the best! It's past time for district 29 to emerge into the current century of diversity. I don't think any Nebraska legislative district is be well served by the traditional homophobic neo-conservative types. "

" LMAO this is funny I guess the damage she caused the YWCA wasn't enough for her. I know I'll be voting Republican for this race. "

" Bashing on the financial state of the YWCA? How low can you get? The Y isn't a corporate business rolling in billions of dollars in profit. If you're so concerned with the financials of the YWCA, why don't you join up? There are lots of different classes and activities that fit nearly everyone. My three year old and I currently attend the Mommy & Me dance class held on Saturday mornings. After six weeks, we still have not had more than 3 in the class. How sad is that? You wonder why the YWCA is failing, it's because the citizens of this city are failing the YWCA. But I guess I wouldn't expect more from you Nebraskans. Let a great organiziation risk failure and complain about it, rather than stepping up and helping out. "

Richard P. Smith wrote on October 28, 2007 10:05 am:
" Although I'm sure Ms Scott is a well qualified fine young lady her anti-pro-life stance makes her taking Tony Fulton's seat against all many of us believe in. Tony has and will continue to be very involved in the pro-life movement, as well as contributing significantly to favorable legislative activity since his appointment by our Governor "

" Fiscally speaking, looks like a mismatch! We need good fiscal managers of this state's revenue. You make the choice. "
