Cindy Lange-Kubick: It may be time for Husker fans to move on

In the grand scheme of things — melting ice caps, rising pump prices, dysfunctional world leaders, never-ending war, housing gluts, shooting sprees, stolen guns, fleeting redemption, eternal salvation — it’s only football.

Granted, it is Husker football, two words that together once meant something special.

Like gold record. Prime rib. White knight. Dark chocolate. Four star. Hot fudge. Rodeo Drive. Academy Award.  Grand Canyon. Heisman trophy.

Indeed, to be a Husker fan was once a grand thing, a reason for hearts to pound and pride to swell, a security blanket on lonesome winter nights.

Anymore, not so much.

Last Saturday night, all over the state, one could hear the sound of a collective identity crumble. It wasn’t a loud sound, just a faint click.

The sound of a remote control turning a television screen dark.

My text message screen blinked at midnight: “What was the final score?”

This from a daughter fed up with a team whose greatness was a mere glimmer from her growing up days.

This from a child who never really knew the teams Bill Bryson wrote about in his 1989 travelogue, his two pages on the state of Nebraska devoted to nothing but our boring landscape, our meager Platte River and our mighty football team.

“When I left America, the University of Nebraska didn’t so much play football as engage in weekly ritual slaughters,” he wrote.

“Watching Nebraska play football every week was like watching hyenas tearing open a gazelle. It was unseemly. It was unsporting.”

And Wednesday, we read on the sports pages that the tough boys from the ’97 championship team stabbed one another with thumbtacks to get the testosterone flowing.

One could almost hear the hyenas again. The whispers in the newspaper’s rustle: Oh, for the glory days.

For so long we’ve hitched our identity to the wagon that was Big Red football. To hell with your ocean breezes, buddy, we can whup your butt on the Fieldturf.

Where are you from, a stranger in the aisle seat might ask politely, 33,000 feet and many hundreds of miles from a shrine called Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska?

In the pause that followed, one could see brain cells strain, feel the longing for a flight attendant to return with pretzels, peanuts, unexpected turbulence, anything.

Then the relief, like a tourist in Paris figuring out the hotel clerk’s directions.

“Oh! Don’t you have that great football team?”

Strangers still conjure up that Rorschach  blot. Only now the tense has changed.

Had. Did. Used to.

Those hapless opponents? Not so hapless anymore.

Imagine that. The Big Red snickered at by rubes in Missouri, where they have the Cardinals, famous barbecue and a very big arch to fall back on during 7-and-4 years.

“Nebraska football,” a former colleague now in California wrote this week. “What a miserable thing that has become.”

Get over it already, says another friend, reminding me the mighty Huskers weren’t so mighty when her moving truck rolled into town from Texas seven years ago.

Move on, she says. The rest of the country already has.

Indeed, we risk appearing more pathetic than we already do to the T.J. Simers of the world, holding onto our glory days like Norma Desmond on “Sunset Boulevard.”

The time for our close-up has come and gone, my friends.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things there is this thing called football.

Yes, it is a fine diversion from the tedium of daily life, the sordid news of talk radio, the weight of world events.

Yes, it is a sad time in our collective history, and it is time for us to come to grips with this sorrowful shift in our foundation. We must face that no longer are we omnipotent, 77,358 square miles defined by cornfed, national championship contenders with a holy host of the red-clad faithful following them into the sunset.

Yes, we must face reality. Get on with our lives. Move past the pain. Embrace a future free of the obsession of football and full of possibilities, never before imagined.

Yes.

Either that, or bring back Bo Pelini.

Take your pick.

" Cindy, you are just too centered on this issue. Remember that Cornhusker football has distorted life itself. It could be termed as an addiction, and fans are undergoing withdrawal. Fans need a fix quickly. There are numerous fixes available. Start with Steve Petersen and end with the SP hired coaches. Thanks for your courage to give perspective to Nebraska football. That being said, what can we do to win big each weekend? I keep track of Volleyball. How about closing in Memorial Stadium and making it into a Volleyball venue? "

" At base, football is entertainment. The competitive nature of that particular form of entertainment requires a winner and a loser. If a fan is uncomfortable with that set of facts, and prefers a form of entertainment in which the outcome carries less likelihood of a disappointing result, they may wish to spend their entertainment dollars on musical comedy. But in a state that is identified with the Big Red phenomenon, it's an identity most of us long for and feel a part of. The glory days are gone. "

" I always enjoy Cindy's column but this one is FANTASTIC. I feel bad for the team members. Those young men work their butts off and they should have our respect for that work ethic. I think the "Husker Nation" feels for them and not just us. They don't deserve this. Steve Peterson's plan for "world dominance" just isn't working out in the football staff. He played his own "little mind games" in his vision for Husker football and the debacle he created in the dismissal of Coach Solich, Gill, Brown, Pellini and others. I don't think the coaching staff members are bad men but coaching is a tenuous profession and currently very, very well paid. Gee, are we asking too much? Great things are expected of someone who is paid in 7 figures. With that responsibility you don't let your team members down by not being prepared to lead them with a good game plan and having the skills to changed that game plan as moments notice as needed. They staff looked like a fall in Nebraska with "deer in the headlights." I think the current group expects players to be "ready made" for greatness with their high prospect classes. Great players are developed through their hard work and the guidance of coaches and an athletic director who's foremost interest is in the development of that athlete not to his own legacy. Look no further for that kind of coaching staff than the Husker Volleyball team and Coach Cook and his staff. It's time to shake the trees and the first nut to fall from he tree should be Peterson. "

I say Go Huskers whether they win or lose, this is my team and I will not "move on" as Cindy suggests. There are many others who feel the same way as I do. This article is really rather unnecessary and by all means Cindy, move on if you need to, but don't encourage your readers to be a fair weather fan like yourself. This is the last article of yours that I will read.. I'm moving on, no more Cindy Lange-Kubick for me. I quit you! "

And Dave Wannstedt just got beat by a service academy running the triple option with 2 star recruits! Walt Harris is the only other FB coach PEdey ever hired. Stanford was smart enough to replace him after only two seasons. His replacement beat #1 USC last week in only his 6th game! Someone please fire Pedey so Husker Nation can start healing. "

" She wasn't saying move on from the team, but I see that subtlety eludes a few. She was saying move on from this life affirming obsession with a game that is played by guys that will hopefully move on themselves one day. I played HS football and its not the focal point of my HS career. I was in the Army and it doesn't dominate my life. I don't know what is more sad-pinning all ones' hopes and dreams vicariously on a bunch of kids or defining an entire state by a game. Nebraska has University that, believe it or not, doesn't exist to provide people with sports entertainment. If you want something like that then petition for an NFL team in NE. UNL has sent two world renowed biologists out into another arena and a NE native is currently on the Space Station. Give the kids a break. They play a game, and then the go to class and study to make something out of themselves. Their job is to go to school, and to play sports as a means of paying for it or for fun. Heck,if you must define yourself by college sports then support the VB girls-they play a COUPLE times a week and they have to play multiple sets a match and they win. "

Ron wrote on October 11, 2007 11:19 am:
" Very interesting article and to the point. A lot of truth to her statements. It is too bad we can't attract a good coach. Bo had players that played their hearts out for him. The current players don't seem to have that faith in their coaches. I agree the problem begins and ends with the coaches and him who hired them. In last weeks game alone, it looked like the coaches had given up rather than try to encourage their players to continue playing as if you were only down a point with a chance to win. It's been this way since day one, and won't change until something happens to the leadership that is currently there. "

Next evaluate the hiring mess. Good thing the Raiders fired Callahan otherwise he may have been forced to hire Gomer Pyle. Pedersons arrogance is sickening. He complained of option football but wouldn't know an option format from the man in the moon. Before anything can be fixed he need to be fired. "

But from what I see, there is no "team" feeling. None of what we used to have. We need Nebraska people running a Nebraska program. Not outside people running a "west coast" program. Yeah, it's all been said before. But that is how Nebraska feels. Why is UNL not listening to us? "

It is time to lift are heads up and do something else in to Lincoln that gives us an economic boost without a win or loose situation. All I can say is NHRA 1/4 mile Drag Racing! "

Can't buy a championship wrote on October 11, 2007 11:48 am:
" Husker football athletics has spent enormous amounts of money on sky boxes, training facilities and a big screen TV under the mistaken assumption that a national championship can be bought. If you want to see what it takes to win a national championship, go watch the women play volleyball in their run down old coliseum. There are no sky boxes and no big TVs. Winning requires teamwork, hard work and determination. Husker footbal fans should dig up Tom Osborne's book "More than Winning." It has important lessons for those misguided football fans. "

To "fan" wrote on October 11, 2007 12:11 pm:
" The Nebraska fans who are complaining are NOT "fairweather" fans. Just because you're a fan of Nebraska doesn't mean you have to blindly nod your head and agree with everything that the coach and AD do!! In fact, if you're annoyed with the way the program has been run the past few years just shows that you are NOT a fairweather fan. A fairweather fan would simply start rooting for some other team or just not care. A fairweather fan roots for Nebraska only when they're good. I am not a fairweather fan, but I am furious with how Pederson has run this program into the ground. The reason we were so dominate for so many years was because we did things "our" way and bucked the common ideas. We didn't chuck our option game for a slick passing attack. We stuck to the run and overpowering defenses...and guess what it was extremely successful. And for all those saying, "yeah, but they couldn't do it that way now". I say, Bull! A few years before TO won his 3 titles, pundits around the country were always calling our system outdated and saying it would never allow us to win the "big game". Hmm! Seems they were wrong. However, now that that tradition has been dismantled I don't think we can seriously entertain the idea of returning to a triple option team. However, we should return to a philosophy of power running and over powering defense. I don't really blame Callahan...he was brought in to implement the West Coast system. I blame Pederson for bringing him in. Callahan is not a college coach...he operates far too much like an executive and the players don't develop. These players need to be coached and taught...they aren't NFLers, who already have the skill set to just be "programmed" for a given system. No, I'm not a "fairweather" fan...I'm just infuriated that our team has been dismantled and is a mere shadow of its former self. I'll root for them no matter what, but that doesn't mean I should be happy when they get torched 3 games in a row!! Its not about recruiting, its not about the players, its about the coaching!! "

Captain Logic wrote on October 11, 2007 12:15 pm:
" Cindy--love your columns, but I'm disappointed this time. Of course the goal is to blow out every opponent and win championships, but you know that winning isn't everything. Now is a great time to be among the best fans in the nation. It's a time to support the team--to encourage them to show good character and play with integrity. The road is as meaningful as the destination. The Huskers will win some and lose some, but making it back to the top after adversity will be all the sweeter. It's going to be a wild ride! "

" Blame the coach, blame the Athletic Dept, blame the players? I too am affected by the ups & downs of the economy with a win or loss. That is the cost of doing business in this town. Football is & always has been the major source of revenue for the University. Win or lose, it is about the sport. The Huskers pull families together, inspires you to have a conversation with a stranger & enjoy a sport that has to have 1 winner & 1 loser. Unfortunately for us, we have been on the losing side. We all want a National Championship brought home again, then it is time to start acting like championship fans. Sure our program has problems, what program doesn't experience the ups & downs? Support the team & players. If you don't like the coach or Athletic Dept then come up with a solution. It is more embarrassing for the players than it is for you & me. It is obvious we need better talent & better recruiting which starts with the coaching staff. Part of the magic of Husker is the fan base. Support every game & let future prospects see & feel our support, even in the low times. "

" I am not from Nebraska originally so I find it interesting that people from here are disappointed with an 8 and 4 season... isn't that still a winning season, you won more then you lost. I think for too long Nebraska had two sensational coaches and motivators of men and are now realizing that special people like that can't be found under a rock in California... Bill Callahan had a terrible record with the Raiders, why people expected miracles when he came to Nebraska is beyond me, history usually repeats itself a losing record in the pros (15-17-0) equates to a bad record at the college record. If you buy a lemon tree you better like the taste of lemonade. "

There is also the Loup, Elkhorn, Platte, Blue, Republican---Nebraska has more rivers crossing it than any other state. And many lakes, as well. Get out of Lincoln and see your home state. "TRADITION NEVER GIVES UP" Except that the tradition is gone from this program. When there is no one to carry it on, tradition can die. These coaches barely understand the Blackshirt tradition, and don't seem to care about it. They have allowed the integrity of the program to go out the window--witness the words you can read on their lips and the lips of the players each week; or the posing and posturing in the endzone during the spring game; or incidents like the player attacking the OU fan in Norman and not being punished or Callahan excusing the outburst that Keller had at a woman in a parking lot. Integrity and honor was the tradition I respected in this program and took pride in. It's gone. It didn't give up; this staff from the AD on down killed it. "

His claim is the program was not headed in the right direction. So Mr. Pederson set out to "hit a home run" by hiring a big name coach. This I believe after really not many folks were even interested with the exception of Coach Pelini. Wow - look at LSU's defense now! After the last 4+ years under this new regime, what direction are we headed? How many ranked teams have we beaten? Coach Hawkins at CU - in only his second year just upset Oklahoma. I think our college guys are thinking too much because these guys cannot teach/coach. They may be creative, but unless the kids understand, then what good is it? I urge Mr. Pederson to swallow his pride and cut the losses now. Enough is enough. "

Couldn't pronounce most of the words and so he just skipped the ones he didn't know. I'm sure he was all about the education. "

Looks like the top candidate for a good college head coaching job after this season and he's only 40! You blew it 3 years ago, Pederson. You bought Callahan's lies and he'll take the money and run back to the NFL where we would rather be- if they'll take him back that is. I'd advise a buy-out of his contract ASAP. " The problem is simple -- and I really wish the LJS folk could get it. I'm not moaning about our recent losses. Indeed, I feel NOTHING. And THAT is the problem. See, this team of Callihan and Pederson is SOoo-ooo alien to the Husker tradition, such a radical departure from our traditional approach and philosophy ... that it doesn't feel like a Husker team. It feels like some west coast team is renting our stadium. I feel no sadness when they lose, and I feel no gratification when they win. There is no emotional tie whatsoever. Pederson was so heck-bent on putting his personal stamp on the program, that he fundamentally destroyed it. How do you come back from that? And to think -- instead of hiring his crony, we COULD have had Bo Pelini. He was right here in our hot little hands. He fit in perfectly with our style while still bringing new focus to our weaknesses. He's now one of the hottest coaches out there ... and we kicked him out the door. We traded him for Pederson's folly. "

You could have let him go with a little grace, but you canned him (Solich) and it was blabbered all over ESPN on a Saturday night. That was the beginning of the end. I personally want Stevo to fail...really. It wasn't a big & difficult decision to make. It was wrong and entirely done the wrong way. You miffed loyal fans, coaches and broadcasters nationwide, and you needed to take care of Solich and company in a dignified way. You set yourself up for a fall and I will gladly watch you fall from the ranks of "almighty," and enjoy your demise. It's gonna happen and you will see what it's like. How dare you talk about Ronald Roskens bringing us ice cream when we were down, on your radio show the other night. You hypocrite...... You stained your fond memorys by being an "idiot," A.D. and making such a contraversial firing and dismantling of our Husker Nation. Listen closely cuz your end is coming!! "

Forgive me for not seeing it, but how is that anything BUT a fair-weather fan??? It seems to me that if you want more "effort, passion and teamwork" from these coaches and players, maybe you should stop bashing their efforts. Just a thought..... Then after you've put this "game" into perspective, maybe try to look around and see all the other great things your state has to offer! "

When Callahan was brought here, a business associate in Texas said to me, "You guys will be sorry." Gee you can read it on the faces of the players, their heart is NOT in it. Nebraska has had this chip on their shoulders everywhere that they are better than anybody, well its coming to futation!! House cleaning is in order starting with Pederson. But golly we're so proud we have nearly the highest taxes in the U.S. We're so proud to drive out business and refuse to build the economy with jobs. I shook Callahans hand a year and a half ago in Kearney and it was like shaking some guys hand that you'd just met. I saw Osborne in Kearney when he was running for Congress and I was in awe. Not just because of what he accomplished, but because he COMMANDS respect without demanding it. And, lastly, I will always be a Husker fan no matter what. I will not abandon this team or this program for any reason. No, I'm not happy with the current situation. Who is? Hard changes must be made. But, consider this: It's fun to be a Husker fan right now. Crazy, huh? Well, the way I see it we're taking a pretty heavy beating right now from teams we used to wipe our boogers on. And we're gettin' it in the shorts from their sub-par fans. It's fun to be the underdog, though. It's fun to defend Nebraska football to the moronic Missouri fans as I've been doing on the FoxSports website. It's fun being down right now, because it will make it that much sweeter when things turn around. So all those former Nebraska fans can wear their Texas hat and shirts, or wear the colors of whatever team is hot right now. I wear my Husker hat ever single day. Don't give up on the IDEA of Husker Football, because it WILL be back someday and you'll have the well-deserved smugness of someone who knew they were right all along. "

If the program were as open as it was when Bob and Tom were here, poorer performing seasons were much more bearable because there was trust. It seems like the trust and respect for the fans are gone. If you lose that more than you already have, you are going to kill the program. Wallets will begin to do the talking sooner than later. There needs to be a coaching shake up. If certain areas are lacking, then it is porbably the coach of that group that needs the shake up. In the past, we had less talented teams, destroying teams of the same caliber we are playing now. They had "IT". They knew it and performed it. The swagger is gone and needs to be brought back. If the play book is too large, make it samller and more effective. It just looks like from week to week, the preparation is lacking, the desire is lacking and the coaching is getting out coached. "

Coach Solich should have been given the chance to let his awesome staff turn things around. They would have done it. After a couple of years, Frank Solich should have then made Coach Pellini the Associate Head Coach and promised him that he would be Solich's hand picked successor. That staff of Solich's would have kicked some major tail in a couple of years. "

It's still amusing when something negative is said about the huskers how a small entry can make them foam at the mouth. Still, with only a football team as bragging rights nebraskans have a right to be broken hearted. I enjoy reading the husker blogs and see the anger being written. I suggested they take the black shirts and give them pink or purple for the rest of the year. No one thought that was funny. The fans need to do a little traveling and see that football doesn't ruin everyones life. I live in a state where the college football team gets page 3 of the local paper. The high schools get the front page sports. It's refreshing. "

If want to feel bad about Nebraska losing to Missouri, go ahead. But then, let it go. There is another game this week, and thousands will dress in red whether they go to the game or not. They all have the ability to be GREAT players;however, it just looks as if someone came along and stole their "fire and their joy". Guys, if your coaches can't give it to you, then give it to eachother - spread that fire and joy among yourselves. Nothing excites the fans more than watching a "well oiled machine" perform on game day by players that display the love of the game! We may have "sleepy looking", businessman coaches on the sidelines, and an amature for an AD, but the players don't have to mirror the Athletic Staff. March to a different drum! If the current ticket holder "dead-pan-fans" decide they no longer want to support the team, maybe the price of tickets will drop back into a price range that those of us who use to go to every home game years ago, but can no longer afford the tickets to watch the Huskers play at Memorial Stadium, will have the opportunity to go again. The stadium will always fill up with fans that still support the Scarlet and Creme! I for one, support our team players and encourage them to dig down deep and play the game the way they were born to play this game! GO BIG RED !!! "

" The reason many football are turned off the by the program now has more to do with the change in philosophies. We reveled in our More Than Winning tradition. But Peterson changed all that. His philosophy is the same as Al Davis's, "Just win, baby!" He even hired one of Al Davis's castoffs. Peterson explained that losing a few games is being mediocre, regardless of your effort and integrity. We are now in the Steve Peterson era, "Winning is the only goal". Kissing his feet is optional, . . . for now at least. "

I don't blame Callahan and I'm not ready to throw in the towel on him. He's just a guy that took a job but I really don't get the feeling that he would ever disagree with Steve. Bo and Steve would've clashed because Bo says what he means and means what he says. Steve just talks in circles and spins everything. He's bad for this state and he needs to get to steppin'.
